It opens up a child's mind and imagination. The Christians only want their kids to believe the fairy tales that THEY are telling them.

I do not think that Harry Potter challenges Christianity and I am a Christian. I have read all of the Harry Potter books at least 3 times each and find nothing that challenges Christianity. It is just another form of entertainment. If poeple think that Harry Potter is corrupting then so would santa, the Easter Bunny, tooth fairy and every other fictitious character ever made up. I LOVE Harry Potter books.

What?
Holy Moly, this question is chock full of stereotypes and outright insults.
Harry Potter does not challenge Christianity. The reason that some Christians are against it, is because of the magic and witchcraft stuff. And if you bother to actually listen to their arguments you might see they have a point.
Harry Potter btw is about a kid going through difficult challenges in life and rising to the occasion.
Where on earth do you get it challenges Christianity?
And as for kids being the bread and butter of Christianity. What the heck? Wow..... Dude you've got some issues.

no, I think that is reading a bit too much into it/being a bit paranoid. As someone who grew up on the fundie side, I can tell you that most really do have their children's best interests at heart, and don't declare something evil just because kids like it.
Honestly, I believe that most have gotten that from someone who didn't read it. Once you read it, you see it is no different than any other fairy tale, and I have no idea how the whole anti-HP thing got started in the first place. Harry Potter actually has good values, such as friendship and loyalty in it. The loyalty aspect alone is a good value to teach.
Sadly, I think the problem is simple ignorance, not purposeful mind control.

I'm a christian and have read all the Harry Potter books and seen all the movies and i am 27 years old...i love children's literature. I don't feel that these books are dangerous in any way to christianity. Harry Potter couldn't hold a candle to Jesus, wand or no wand. i would like you to understand however that just because some, and i mean a small minority of christians, dislike the books doesn't mean that ALL christians dislike the book. Additionally, ALL christians don't indoctrinate their children, we just raise them according to the morals, values, ethics, and character found in the Bible. When they become adults and no longer under the control of their parents it will be the child's utlimate choice to continue in faith or to deviate from it. overall, beware of stereotyping people because when you are trying to make a sincere point, using stereotypes makes your argument very weak. Just a tip on winning a debate next time you find yourself in one.

Harry Potter does not challenge Christianity. Harry Potter ignores it. Like so many people do. It is an indirect challenge.
Most Christians I know like or dislike the books due to literary quality of them, and for no other reason.

That's not the reason.
The Harry Potter series deals with magic, and a "dark" form of magic at that. That the series has been geared to children appalls us as adults, and parents, and as Christians.
Because we are Christians, we do believe in Satan, and in the demonic influences that surround our lives on a daily basis throughout society. The media is filled with the promotion of ungodly, unbiblical things and we are already flooded with it. To have Harry Potter target our children with the dark side of the spirit realm pushes the envelope over the top.

You are absolutely right! Christians DO dislike Harry Potter because it misleads chidlren, right down the path to hell! And the children are not solidly enough based spiritually, to recognize the deception that is going on, let alone that there is an evil and wicked side to these books/movies/games! The other reason is that the author herself admitted in a Canadian news radio interview that that was her goal! (Of course the interview was quickly pulled never to be heard of again...)

Frankly with so many children either illiterate or reading on levels below themselves, shouldn't anyone be happy the children are in fact reading? As for this query, I am not sure the answer, I do think it ridiculous for some people to continuously say harry potter promotes witchcraft.

I don't like Harry Potter, and I'm a Christian, and the two facts have nothing to do with each other.
Don't get me wrong, I think that it's awesome that kids are reading but for me the book wasn't my cup of tea. I do like fantasy but honestly I prefer George RR Martin or Glen Cook.
