Are we replacing one animal sacrifice with a more uncomfoftable one? Does anyone else feel uncomfortable with this? First Lambs Goats and Oxen, why is Christianity now all about the blood and sacrifice of our species? I don't know why I stumble on this part, can anyone explain?

Helen- yes I do seem to relate to the old testament more, as I feel It is a more honest picture, I do not know why though. I believe in the creation in the bible and that is about it. God is very different to that for me, God is not just the bible ( flawed as translated through sinning man) but so much more, that is why I struggle to undrestand.

Blood symbolizes life. Blood holds life. The animal sacrifices of the Old Testament were a symbolic sacrifice to atone for the inherent sins of man and provide a means for man to approach God. In the New Testament God created a covenant between Himself and the only Perfect sacrifice that would create an unbreakable covenant, Himself as Jesus. The blood shed represents the life of God covering the sins of man so man can approach the throne.

Where in the Old Testament, lambs were the ultimate sacrifice..Jesus (God) became the ultimate sacrifice for our sin as the 'sacrificial Lamb'..for us. He was the last of the sacrifices...No sacrifices of humans or animals should take place now or since then.
Best wishes, Mike.

I think that is an ancient understanding, that has carried over. But many modern theologians and Christians have been raising the same questions. There are many problems with the focus on blood and human sacrifice. The main one being what kind of God demands human sacrifice of his own son? I encourage you to read some of Marcus Borg's books, he puts some of the theological stuff in understandable terms.

You must understand the concept of sin first.
Every man has sin. They all done wrong things.
God is disgust with sin and can not have a single spot of sin.
But God wants to be near you. That's why something has to be done.
Adam and Eve are the first ones to see blood of animals to be spilled. God provided them skins of animals to cover their nakedness. This is the first illustration of substitution for other's faults. This concept is found all over human culture.
But no animals were suitable enough. We have God's image. It is too precious and no animals can come close in substituting our worth in God's eyes.
Not even a man (with sin) can be a substitute for our sin. That's why God sent Jesus to die in our place.
If pure is needed, non pure can not take place. Jesus is spotless and God accepted Jesus' sacrifice.

It is important to place this in context...
1. God created man.
2. Man rebelled, and is now in a state of corruption (the fall).
3. God has attributes that include that he is Just and Holy.
4. Because of his Just and Holy nature, he cannot tolerate sin, and the penalty for this death.
5. Justice would say he would then make us pay individually for our transgressions.
6. Because he is Merciful, he allows another (His Son) to pay the price of our transgressions, thus fullfiling the requirements of Justice.
7. Not only does Jesus bear the burden of our guilt, we receive credit for his living a perfect and obedient life, which fullfills the Holiness requirement. It is a double transfer. Jesus lived the perfect life that Adam did not.
8. Because of the Holiness, Justice, and Merciful attributes of God, the atonement was necessary

OT & NT Lambs offered in sacrifice in the Temple
Jesus died for us -he sacrificed himself for us-he is the 'Lamb'
That replaced in the Christian church the animal sacrifices.
There were no more sacrifices after the Temple was destroyed in 70AD
Symbolic words.

The OT is full of human sacrifice, as Elohim often requested the sacrifice of the first born child. This same God was even pleased by the sacrifice of his own son, supposedly. Blood and violence throughout. Who would worship a god like that?

The animal sacrifice was a Shadow of the sacrifice God himself would make to save his Creation. the wages of sin is death because God is righteous we do have the option of paying this penalty ourselves I prefer to accept the atonement and am not ashamed of my God who paid the penalty of death for me but am eternally in his debt and grateful. How do you honor God without understanding or accepting the price he paid with his righteous blood? How do you honor God and be ashamed of him at the same time?

THERE MUST BE BLOOD! Slop it on your door jams, drip it from mutilated genitalia, split little boys' nether apertures, onward Christian soldiers, or hold an Inquisition and roll your own.
It's the Word of God; no problem. Yahweh is singularly disinterested in human suffering other than to inflict it. Let us ask the Forbidden Question in counterpoint, "If stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out?"

Jesus already made the sacrifice. Now it is up to you to cash in on the reward. Or deny it and claim something else.
