I don't have any problem with it at all.
First of all, it is fiction, and pretty well written fiction. Rowling got better, as she went along, but overall, its a pretty good story.
Secondly, as a person that was, at one time a practicing warlock, I realize that the types of "witches and wizards" they mention in these stories are the mythical type on the same par with a unicorn, and have nothing whatsoever to do with religious witchcraft.
Thirdly, I don't see any of these people who are arguing over the use of the term "Wizard" or "Witch"getting upset in the least about Tolkein's 'Lord Of The Rings', or his friend CS Lewis's 'Narnia' series, which were both written by devout Christian men, who attended the same church, and whose series' were both full of witchcraft.
By the way, I am no longer in "The Craft". I met Christ 17 years and 2 months ago, and there has been no looking back.
Hope this helps...

I don't have a problem with Harry Potter. I think that some Christians and other religious folk pick and choose what is wrong. I agree that witchcraft isn't right in the Christian religion; however, the books are fiction. There is no witch school with talking pictures and moving staircases. There's no moving photographs or a complete magic village. This is not true witchcraft. It's just a children's novel. Let me give you something to think about. Law & Order is one of the most popular dramas on tv. It's also one of the longest running. There are murders, rapes, and other sinful things in the show. However, I know many Christians that watch it and enjoy it. I haven't heard of anyone saying someone will become a murderer or rapist because of watching Law & Order. It's ludicrous to think someone will be a witch because of reading Harry Potter.

Well, I like the debate as it made me read the first book. I believe they should have left the title alone. The books are way better than the movies.
For those that say it is bad because of Wizards and Witches I hope you have never read or watched Narnia or Lord of the Rings (both by Christians).
I would have problems with it if they were teaching real incantations instead of the pseudo ones which I find humorous.
While I would never say Harry is a "Jesus persona" I do see many great noble Christian traits. His willingness to share. Rising above his circumstances. Obeying rules he does not fully understand. Fearless in the face of adversity be it small or large. Willing to stand by his friends and elders. Respect and the list goes on and on. Why would you not want your children to watch it ( if they are old enough)?

My children and I love the Harry Potter books and movies! I have no problem letting my kids see the movies(once I make sure that there is nothing in them that they may get scared by. I mean after all my kids are only 6 and 3!).
There were once many books that once banned because of their "context or controvsial nature" that are now required reading in schools. I say whatever gets my kids excited about reading and learning is a good thing! Besides all the "magic" in Harry Potter can not happen in the real world no matter how hard to try to make it happen!

No religion is ever expressed in Harry Potter, unless you consider astrology a religion. I think it is sad that some ignorant Christians want most of their children to progress in school and wisdom yet they can't trust them to come to a conclusion about a imaginative story. Don't people think that as confusing the Bible can be at times for children they might interpret that wrong and and act on it, for example little kids might believe that women are actually below them or that slavery is a good thing. It doesn't teach children anything and even if it did what are these children going to do, try and perform the spells? People who are worried must not have a lot of faith in their belief. Grow up.

it affects children the same way fairy tales and cartoons do. As long as they are old enough to know the difference between fantasy and reality, I see no harm. Most people who get all upset about Harry Potter haven't actually read the books, but are going on what someone who needed something new to rail about one day said. (My parents, for example, who claim HP is evil, have never read the book, and then watch Chronicles of Narnia, The Sword and the Stone, all the Disney fairy tales, and every other G rated movie or book out there with magic in it that doesn't come from God. Sighhh.) :)

Atheist here. Personally I think that the panic over Harry Potter is nuts. It's fiction, no different than Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and the Chronicles of Narnia. People need to lighten up and note the difference between reality and fantasy.

But Harry's withcraft isn't evil in the way that they portray it. Also, almost all of the problems that some spells can cause can be fixed with a spell just as simple. The evil withcraft is clearly defined from the good withcraft, and the evil witchcraft is always used with clearly evil intent.
