so...lets say someone devotes their life to having faith in God and an afterlife of paradise. they believe in it whole-heartedly. yet when they die, there's nothing...God isn't real and there's no afterlife. what did they really have to lose by believing? they lived a fulfilling, happy life...what did it hurt by having a faith while they were alive?

The same query can be asked about Atheist. Why can't we just live our happy and fulfilling life too? Why must we be condemned to mythical hell for not believing? BTW, I don't think nothing can be lost if they choose to believe. I only have a problem when they push their religion on me.

It retards scientific advancement which in turn harms our species ability to survive long term.
Religion teaches an us vs. them mentality and even though there are many moderates that mentality encourages fanaticism.
We need to think of EVERYONE (including the generations yet to come) on this planet not just ourselves.

that would be a phylosophical question...It is ok to devout your life to a lie??? if it gives you comfort, is it ok??? a lie is a lie, one may think that if it brings happiness then it is ok, as long as one is happy without hurting others there is no problem BUT why do people need lies to be happy? where is the general mistake that "forces" people to be happy devouting their lives to lies? Isnt it possible for anyone to be happy facing the truth?
I think that life can be hard so as long as you are happy there shouldnt be any problem with what means you use (without hurting others) but if you think about it, it may be a bit sad.

wasted time. think of all those hours they wasted praying and going to church. think about all the friendships they missed out on because someone didn't agree with them. think of all the people they pissed off and hurt with their self-righteous attitude.
yes, they have a LOT to lose by wasting their life believing in some imaginary god.

The question is not what you have to lose but what do you have to gain.
Beautiful song by Dottie Rambo says it all for me..
Too many miles behind me too many trials are through
Too many tears help me to remember but there's too much to gain to lose
Too many sunsets lie behind the mountains
Too many rivers my feet have walked through
Too many treasures awaiting over yonder there's too much to gain to lose

I've crossed the hot burning desert struggling the right road to choose
Somewhere up ahead there's cool cool clear water and (defeat is one word I don't use)

Suppose we've chosen the wrong god. Every time we go to church we're just making him madder and madder.

You don't have anything to lose. At least you had joy while you were alive! Look at this world can Christians have some happiness?
