I had the same problem. The brakes didn't act any diffrently but the sensor came on and stayed on. A good friend who is a mechanic checked it and told me little bits of rust flakes, or dirt interfer with the sensor setting it off. Don't waste your money getting the sensor changed or having a mechanic poke around. Having the sensor on will not hurt a thing. But when the brakes begin to act diffrently then have them checked out.

From your description it sounds like you have a failure of the ABS brake actuator. It is the part of the system that pumps the brakes for you. The sound you are hearing is most likely the actuator trying to do its job. While the brakes should function in a non-ABS way you need to get this checked out properly by a shop with experience with ABS systems. Todd

Yes there is a problem with your system that's why the light has come on. As far as what the problem is you will have to have the code read and diagnosed in order to fix it. It could be a bad wheel speed sensor which commonly causes the light to come on but there is no way of knowing without having it checked.

I had the same issue with my Ford Explorer (1998). I had a computer problem with the braking system, so I had to bring it in and have them reset the alert code. Not much more I can tell you other than hook the system up.

it means your ABS is not working, you have brakes, but no ABS. Probably just a sensor at one of the wheels, a tester can tell you where.

Typically it's the ABS sensor located in the rear differential housing.
