I don't get it. She's not overweight and enjoys the same stuff as other kids her age -- Bratz dolls, Spongebob, playing with her friends, soccer, splashing at the water park and yet she loves and I mean LOVES Richard Simmons.

She made me TIVO a couple of his infomercials which she likes to watch as we get her dressed and I comb her hair in the morning.

She drew a picture of Richard and asked me if I could mail it to him a couple weeks ago. I pretended to, so now she watches the mail everyday looking to see if she got a letter back from him.

Her Dad suggested we write her a pretend letter so she'll stop looking.

When I ask her why she likes Richard so much she gives a vague answer like, "he's happy" or "he's funny"

But a lot of people that come on TV are "happy" and even funnier than him. So I can't figure out why is she fixating on the guy that does Sweating to the Oldies! It's so weird!

i think that kids can be very good judges of character. he's a sweet, generous, enthusiastic guy who jumps around in colorful clothes, encouraging people to do their best. also, his music is really upbeat and entertaining. i'm sure all of this appeals to your daughter. nothing to worry about! just go with it and, like anything that kids are interested in, she'll move on to other things before you know it...just hope the new interests stay as benign as richard simmons.

I have a 3 (almost 4 ) year old, and she loves the oddest things. Her taste in music is nothing after 1970. I think sometimes, kids just find things that make them happy in that odd sort of way. I wouldn't stress about it too much. If she's really obsessing over getting the letter go ahead and mail one back to her. Try printing out a picture of him on the computer and then signing it for her or something. I have a feeling though, that like most four year old obsessions, she'll grow out of it. =) Hey, there are A LOT worse people she could idolize!!

When I was a kid I liked Richard too! Maybe not to the same extreme but like someone else said, he has wild frizzy hair, is super energetic and dresses funny! She just finds him fun and entertaining. I really wouldn't worry about it. She'll grow out of it eventually. Just be glad that she likes watching someone who is funny like Richard Simmons instead of finding humor in something like the Simpsons where they treat each other like crap and make it seem normal and OK.

You have nothing to worry about. Your daughter likes Richard Simmons because he dresses in brightly-colored clothing, and has a lot of charisma. Also, his exercises look a lot like dancing. Little kids like to dance and move around a lot, especially to upbeat music.

BTW, Richard Simmons would probably be thrilled if you sent a letter with the picture your daughter drew of him.

I wouldn't obsess about her interest in Richard Simmons, its a perfectly normal thing. I had a younger sister that was crazy about Telly Sevalas (she had a thing for bald men when she was that age). Go ahead and mail her letter to him. Who knows she may get a response. It can't hurt. She'll grow out of it eventually but if you keep making a big deal about it she will focus more on it.

He's short, has frizzy hair and energetic. That's why. Some kids are just attracted to certain things on t.v. When my daughter was 18 mos old she loved Toby Keith on those truck commercials, and I have no idea why.

I would not worry! if i was a little kid and i watched Richard Simmons, i think i would love him too! he wears bright clothes, his voice is very animated, and take it from your daughter! he is happy and funny (to her..anyways) so i would not worry one bit, hey! maybe when she gets older, she will be an aerobics instructor!
