The best advice I heard was to arrive very early to get on the plane and explain your problem to the person on duty. There is often a coat closet in the first class area where you might be able to hang the dress for safe keeping during the flight. You may also want to contact the airline beforehand to see if they have any other suggestions or limitations.

You can use any postal system in your area it will get to the virgin Islands; remember if you are posting it to the hotel contact the front desk manager of the hotel and let them know that you will be sending your wedding dress via a mail carrier( remember to write down the name of the manager)(remember to insure it and get a tracking number) or when you are coming bring it with you.. this will en shore that it arrives with you.

Fold it up so it will fit in the biggest carry on the plane will allow - maybe some type of garment bag. Then when you get there have it pressed/steamed so there are no wrinkles or creases. That way you know that the dress gets there with you.

A wedding planner said that it is better getting a dress where you are so that it is easier to get it altered if you need to and then just put it on the plane with you. It is going to be harder finding a wedding store and then having to get it altered when you are far away.

Line up a dry cleaners and mail it to them and they can press out the wrinkles.

If you don't trust mailing the dress I will have an empty carry on suitcase that I will pack the dress in and take it on the plane with me. When I get there it will be taken to the cleaners and all the wrinkles pressed out for me.

Take it on the plane in a garment/gown bag. The stewardess will hang it for you.
