Squirrels are not illegal in all states.. so that is wrong but the rehabber is right - squirrels should only be in a home if it is a life threatening situation for the squirrel. It is not easy to keep a baby squirrel alive if you don't know how. That is why you should take them to the wild life refuge and not a home. You can't leave ANY animal unattended any way. Once the squirrel is grown sometimes they are rejected in the wild by the other squirrels- they could kill them by the territorial nature of the wild ones

my ma and I found a baby squirrel that had fallen out of a tree..his eyes and ears werent even open yet..we took him home and raised him to be full grown, named him buttons..he had free roam of the house..he made a nest in the laundry room. we went on vacation for a few days and when we got back he had found a way out of the house and had been out side the whole time with the "wild" squirrels. after that he got vicious and would attack us. we finally just let him go in the back yard and he still lives there to this day, he even survived hurricane katrina. it was a wonderful experience for us but in the end he was just meant to live in the wild.

unless you have rescued the squirrel there is no need for it to be in a house. we should not have kept the squirrel as long as we did but that was a lesson learned and now we know that wild animals belong in the wild and it does not matter how young you get them it does not matter. instincts will kick in.

I agree with the first answers... I'm not sure if it's illegal everywhere but trying to keep a squirrel as a pet is, pardon my bluntness, just plain stupid. Respectable pet stores do not sell baby squirrels.

Squirrels are wild animals. They need a lot of room to roam and climb. When they are adults, they pee and poop everywhere, become very nervous and high strung, and will bite frequently. They chew everything around them. They are cute, but they are definitely terrible pets. I know one person who tried to keep one and it ended up chewing 2 of its own legs off in frustration. True.
