I have a 2 yr old Chessapeake Bay Retriever who is starting to get a little testy. He has growled at a few people including my daughter and wife. We also have his father and he has gone at him a few times. I was just wondering how you all would handle this situation? What would you do with him?
Thank you for helping me out with this.

Thank you all so far. I love the idea about a behaviorist, but where I live, I highly doubt there is one close by. I am a legally blind and live on a limited income, so I cant afford to fly us around the country to look for someone. I live in the arm pit of the north country in northern ny, many hours away from a city. I will do my best to find someone.

He is at the age of adulthood and aggression will show thru. First is he neutered, if not have him neutered. It really helps cut down on aggression. I have fostered and owned many aggressive dogs and the best thing you can do is bring a dog behavior specialist into your home to work with them. Not obedience as much as behavior modification. And most of the time it is you that has to make changes. I have seen them turn very aggressive dogs around. Now is the time to fix the problem do not wait.

If he is OK medically- I would go to a veterinary behaviorist and have him evaluated. Do not mess around and wait- get this done asap. Make sure this is a behaviorist- not a trainer. Try calling your vet to see if there is a referral practice nearby and get a referral. Don't go cheap. Don't call Barkbusters either- they are not ideal for your situation. Look at this website www.ovrs.com if you are in Michigan- you can go there and have an evaluation done. Please don't let any more time go by- it only takes one time for your daughter to make the wrong move and he bites her. Or it could be a friend or family member- and then you have a law suit. Get this done quickly. Before its too late.

Let him know who's boss and that he's not the alpha dog.
To begin correcting the problem you'll need to keep a short leash on him at all times and you'll have to catch him in the act. Even 2 seconds later he'll wonder what you're ticked off at him about.
Or, talk to your local humane society and see if they can find a home for home.

If this is all new, get him to a vet as some illnesses have unusual aggression as a symptom. If the vet says all clear, then have him evaluated by a professional triner before he hurts someone. Good luck!

Hiya
Before I can help you ---- How old are they? Are they neutered? How much exercise are they getting? Are they the only pets in the house? Has anything changed (ie your work schedule)? Has "going at him" been about space, food, toys, attention?

1) have vet give him a physical to make sure there is no physical reason then
2) work with a dog trainer, and develop life style changes and training that he needs

the best thing to do [if your relatives haven't be to your house for a while], is to let the dog get used to the people that are coming over

when he starts to growl, immediately shush him and command that he sit! let him know, at all times, that you are the pack leader. hopefully if you are consistent with this practice he will soon get out of this bad habit.
