im just wondering, ive had a hernia for many years I think now, but it is only a little bulge I can feel when I cough. I have heard it can get strgulated, but would it be obvious if it was stragulated? What would be the symptoms? Thanks

YES!
Strangulated hernia involves severe abdominal pain. You'd know! Basically the walls of your abdomen are pinching your intestines

If it was strangulated then you would not be able to keep food down. Strangulating means that it is pinched and nothing is able to pass through the intestines. You'd know. But you really need to get it fixed. A strangulated hernia can kill you and fairly quickly.

you would have excrutiating pain in the general area of the hernia, fever likely, and swelling with discoloration. Tissue death happens very quickly, that is why when a hernia increases in size or gets any worse, a doctor will generally repair it.

moderate to severe pain. Try to wear a binder or something to prevent it from bulging out and becoming strangulated.

First of all if you don't take care of it, it only gets worse!!! I would have it dealt with!!! If it opens and leaks into your system, you could die...!!! and usually there is nothing they can do for you.... I will shock your system. Believe me my dad died form something similar like this...... I don't mean to scare you but I would see your doctor.
