11 hrs ago I asked a quesion about customer support in the Nikon and Canon families. Does anyone have any problems conveying your questions in these two companies, getting the propper answer. I own a Sony, and most times they just don't understand my exact question. In future I'd like to buy either a Nikon or Canon DSLR. Will I have the same problems with their customer support. Are we speaking to somebody from India?

Fortunately or unfortunately, I have never had to call a camera company for support – ever. Dell computers – now that's another story. For Dell, I know that we are calling India, because I asked. Usually, my support calls are received in Delhi. Once when I had a really exceptional guy, I asked if there was some way I could tell Dell that he had really been a great help and he said that I could just complete the survey that I was going to receive in e-mail. Unfortunately, he said that he was being considered for a supervisory position. But God bless him for his abilities. :-)

In "The World is Flat," Thomas L. Friedman says that we are probably getting superior support from India. The typical CSR in India is very near the top of the feeding chain. He or she has a job to be proud of that requires some education. It is likely that this person has risen to the highest status of anyone in their family. If you speak to a typical CSR in the USA (think of your cell phone carrier), you are often speaking to someone who has not had enough education to qualify for a "real job" and the chances are they are even embarrassed by their career path. These are NOT my thoughts, as I have no basis for making such statements, but they are from Friedman's book. Maybe the CSR in Bangalor or Delhi are expert at what they do, but sometimes I think they need more knowledge of the English language if they are supposed to understand and instruct us poor lazy Americans.
