People can be distracted and focus on little things instead of the weighty matters of the Faith.

Different personality types find different things important or trivial.

Have you frequently visited the thousands of churches in your own home state or country to be able to make an assessment that"most churches are petty"?

Jenny, I have often wondered that myself! I give you a star!

People are very human and it is not easy to truly emulate the Christian ideals of faith, hope, love, charity, kindness, forebearance, tolerance, magnanimity, peacemaking, patience, acceptance and loyalty.

So many people go to Church and form cliques and social circles that are the direct opposite of what the best of Christianity has to offer. They become excusive instead of all-inclusive. They tend to be like the Sneetches in the Dr. Seuss story. They see themselves as the "chosen ones" and they become prideful, pushing all away from them becaause they do not conform with their ideas of what churches are supposed to be about.

I am glad that you make the distinction between what the churches stand for and what the people actually PRACTICE!

Very few ministers and pastors will correct their congregations because to do so would incur the wrath of their congregation and they will be out of a job! So they preach what they are paid to preach which is seldom what the people need to hear in order to be better Christians.

So many people turn their Churches into de facto country clubs, which is a thing that must truly sadden our Savior.

Dear jennyann4,

You seem to be asking a lot of questions about why pastors make "so much money" and why are "Christians so petty." Would this happen to be your personal experience or have you had this experience with many Christians from many different churches.

i know many churches who are very giving to the community and do much in terms of outreach, etc. As the youth/college pastor at my church we spend much of the year reaching out to the poor, the abused (we work with an organization that frees teens who are being sexually exploited in other countries), the elderly, etc.

This past week my Sunday school classes home work assignment was to spend $5 of their own money and find a way to make a difference in their world. I had a good time treating two homeless persons to lunch and just talking to them about life- and praying for their families.

i can't really speak for everyone- but just saying that every church that i've ever been associated with are filled with people who are kind and giving. Yes, in any group of people you will find some people who are "petty".

i guess i just find your comment very general and negative and i just wonder if that's just your personal experience as opposed to an universal truth- because Christians are taught to be giving to be a blessing to others because they've been blessed.

And it is both the parents and the kids. A couple of months ago i was dining out with a one of the kids from my old church. One of the moms from my church recognized me and was with her daughter and i said hi to both of them. When the time came for me to pay the check - this lady had payed for our bill- and she didn't even know the other person that i was with. i think God graciously gives to others and at times we graciously receive.

Kindly,

Nickster

Can you give some details? Petty in what ways? I'm not sure what you are looing for here. Sorry. Plus, the members of the churches make the churches, so if you are talking about the members you are also talking about the churches. or are you talking about the Catholic Church or the Baptist church or the Mormon church or another one? Need more detail. Petty is too narrow.

Peace!

I think pettiness extends from rules and an attempt to set example and be as perfect as they can because of so much hypocracy in our lives. These petty people want to make everything ceremonial worthy and right. To bad most of them live in fear for eternal damnation, something that cannot exist and whose fear breeds this pettiness. But these people actually mean no harm, who does in the beginning though?

Probably for the same reason "most" Atheists are petty (their memebers anyways). People are people.

because we are sinners and you really get a good look at the Pride side of sin when you are involved in a Church but, this is where you really need Jesus is when you see the faults of everyone and choose to love them anyway and try to overlook their human drawbacks. Lord knows we have our own..

Hate to say it ...............we all get that way at times.
Even the disciples. Remember when they were discussing who was the greatest among them. Can you just imagine Peter saying "Yeah, they came to me and said "Did I know Jesus" and I said "Did I know Jesus.....Well, I'm His right hand man .....He gave me the keys to the kingdom"
Then I can see John saying " Well that might be so Peter but I'm his favorite and He named my brother James and I THE SONS of THUNDER."
Then of course Jesus said ..."Do you want to know who's the greatest in the kingdom??????
Then he reaches for a child and said "A child is the greatest in the kingdom." [It was because of the complete trust and innocence]

You see...........We all have our times but just take a deep breath and love everyone anyway.

(Yes we are and they are and we all are petty)
