In interest of harmony and tolerance can you name some you deeply admire who has a different belief system than you do?
Here is mine
I am an atheist and I admire Bono, who is a catholic. He does a lot with his celebrity to make things better for the poor.

Not one person- but I DEEPLY admire the Whirling Dervishes- so beautiful, such deep love and admiration for their creator! This was an excellent question!

You know I sat here thinking about this question for about 5 minutes and couldn't think of a single person which is horrible because I knew so many at one time but with recent events that have happened in my life they lost my admiration. I knew a Jew, Christian, Pagan, and Catholic who I admired but they lost that admiration and part of my respect. I will say that their are many people from all different religions that I have a lot of love for but to say I admire them would be going to far. You should have talked to me a year ago and I would have named them and told you why.

I am a Baptist type Christian and the person I can think of is a guy I work with that is a Wiccan. I admire him for his great work skills and he has some neat hobbies such as ham radio operator. He helps out with radio dispatch stuff like EMT and 911 sometimes. He helps take care of an off road recreation vehicle park. He is a really good person also.

Mother Teresa, MLK, Jimmy Carter for his honesty, Ravi Shankar, Johnny Cash & June Carter, Gandhi, Scott Carpenter (and the astronauts in general), Patton (yes, I have a problem with some of his quirks, but I admire his strength of character), Eisenhower for the tough decisions he had to make, Churchill (curmudgeon, but a leader), Kennedy for his vision, and, yes, Bono. There are so many more.

I deeply admire Abraham Lincoln. His humanism, his calling to politics as a noble endeavor, his belief that he could change the world for the better and his success in doing so have always set an example I can only aspire to.

Most of the monuments in Washington D.C. have amazing and powerful words set in stone. The Jefferson and FDR memorials come to mind as wonderful. But nothing compares to the uplifting words of Lincoln.

I'm an atheist. Lincoln was apparently not. To quote from the source cited below:

"Fairly early in Lincoln's life he developed many distinctly personal beliefs. Lincoln read the Bible regularly and was committed to God and morality throughout his life."

Lincoln's wisdom and humility permitted him to bring together disparate and brilliant minds to form a cabinet that advised him through the most challenging period of American history. Unlike today's politicians, he was a true uniter of people. If only he had lived to shepard the reconstruction.

FYI, an excerpt from his second inaugural address:

With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan -- to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.

P.S. And he was actually a Republican! Can you believe it? :)

Everyone on my Contacts and Fans. I only allow people that are tolerant and care about people as people to be added. I don't allow horrible people or those who are out to cause trouble on my profile at all. And all of my 360 friends. Lokasenna is somebody I deeply admire for her strength. Kallan, too. It takes guts in the world we live in to come out and say what your true beliefs are, and for those beliefs to "follow their own drummer". I also like Squishy and Nate (his new name I will not reveal). They don't share my same religion, but the belief in being humane and striving for peace among people is strong on both sides.

I once had a boyfriend who was Jewish, I am Christian, he was lots of fun.
Most people that are famous, I don't know what religion they are, I just admire them for who they are and what they are doing.
Why should religion have anything to do with the fact that they are doing great things.
That is a very good question!

I can give many specific names, but I will not for their personal privacy. I can tell you I have admiration for many of my family members that are Catholics, I am not. I have friends that are of Sikh, Muslim and Pagan beliefs I admire for their confidence and devotion to their path. I do not always agree with these peoples views I still admire them.
