But the torchlight projects a gigantic silhouette on the cliff face behind.
I think that it's an inspired painting. And would like a copy. Thanks.

Hj Angela l and Guess who, thanks for the Links: they are brilliant!
I saw the painting in a book about Opera (or Wagner) years ago!
It was something like the one that you show, but the shadow was projected on to a sheer cliff in the background.
making Wagner's "Stupendous Requiem on the Death of a Super-Hero" achieve superhuman proportions.

Hi Professor, thanks for the info.
At the moment, I have in my hand a book illustrated by Rackham:
It's a child's edition of Gulliver's Travels.
A much-loved book that I won as a school prize many moons ago. One of these days I'll frighten the library to death by asking for the unexpurgated Version!
Thanks again! Vincent.

I think this would be Arthur Rackham - a great book illustrator.

Added later: I have had a look and Arthur Rackham illustrated several of Wagner's works including Siegfried so he must be your man. I expect you know Rackham but just in case, he is the guy who paints fairies and so on in children's books but he did illustrate adult books as well. A wonderful artist.

I do hope this helps you find the painting. Gulliver's Travels is a super read

There is a painting of Siegfried's procession by a painter called Ferdinand Leeke, a German artist (1859-1925) who produced paintings of mythical subject matter connected to Wagner operas.
If you go to http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/tml/tml40.htm and then scroll down right to the bottom of the text there is the picture which you can ennlarge by clicking on it. . As you can see it is a monochrome plate, and I can nowhere- absolutely nowwhere - find a better repro. of it. Is this what you are looking for?
