My family and I are going to Florida in a month or so. Are there any interesting words we should know about? Last time we went, a bloke asked me what I usually wore with jeans so that he could measure them right. I replied "trainers". He laughed his head off. Ok, so we now know about that one. But are there any other useful ones we should know about?

Obviously I'm not going to speak in American slang or anything yet! A bloke is slang term for a man. So dude, guy etc. We also know about the crisps - chips - fries triangle. My little sister was highly unimpressed with her meal of a hamburger and potato chips/crisps!

Well just to let you know I'm pretty sure that we don't use the word bloke here in the U.S. either. I myself don't even know what that is. So I wouldn't use that. Other differences would be the parts of a car for example what you guys call the boot (not sure about spelling) we call trunk. You guys say chips we say French Fries or just fries (chips in America are what you call crisps).
These are just a few. If you have any questions you can e-mail me.
Good Luck

If you are writing or drawing something in pencil and you make a mistake, do not ask for a rubber. Ask for an eraser. Americans and English both use the word "fanny" but for different parts of the anatomy. In America it is your bum, in England it is female genitalia. The word "@ss" in the USA means bum again, it has nothing to do with donkeys or idiots. By the way, a "bum" in the USA is a tramp or down-and out so be careful with that one..

Having looked at the other answers I noticed that the more common ones are missing, I all ways notice them when watching the movies on TV. Mum=== Mother, Mate===Friend, Petrol=== gasoline, Me=== I,
Mum and me with my Mate are going to buy some petrol.
My mother,me and a friend are going to buy some gasoline.
The sentence structure is not very good but you will get the idea, of course your accent will give you away.

don't say bloke use dude or guy. As long as you stick to calling your clothes pants, t-shirt, boxers, socks, sandals/sneakers then I think you will be fine.
