My brother is giving us his miles so we can get tickets to go to Italy next summer. His miles will be enough for coach. Would it be possible to purchase an upgrade to business/first class? This would be American Airlines. The flights would probably be NYC Rome; Venice/NYC

Yes it is possible to get an upgrade using miles, when the ticket is on your name..
2 limitations:
1) the coach class ticket must be purchased on a certain fare, usually not the lowest discount fare.
2) This is based on availability, there is a quota of awards per flight, and it usually very small (like 2 per flight) so when it comes to international flights - it all taken.
3) For American airlines there is also the problem of blackouts date where you can't use your miles not for upgrades and not for flight tickets.

No, you usually cannot pay for an upgrade on a mileage ticket. However, you can give your money to your brother and have him purchase enough miles to get you a free ticket in your desired class. He'd have to purchase it for his account and then ticket the mileage ticket in your name.

Can he buy me a ticket too? I wanna go.....

Good luck and happy travels!

i do no longer believe you could. considering the fact which you have an award value ticket and technically does not have a greenback value, there could be no thank you to make certain how lots money you will possibly might desire to pay to enhance. in case you desire to apply your skymiles to enhance besides, you will might desire to cancel your coach award value ticket and get a sparkling top quality award value ticket. in case you look, upgrading employing Skymiles fairly sux. the improve volume is the comparable as what you will possibly desire to get the seat completely on miles. ie in case you like one hundred,000 miles for a regular classification value ticket, you'll want one hundred,000 miles to enhance your financial device value ticket to top quality.

First off, you cannot transfer miles to another user/account unless he is the one that's getting the upgrade.
