It is a strong hallucinogen that has been used by some cultures for getting high or for religious purposes for centuries.

The mushrooms contain two toxins, ibotenic acid and muscimol. Ingestion of these toxins results in "expanded perception," talking to God, distorted perception, rapid heartbeat, dry mouth. They are hallucinogenic and psychoactive, acting on the nervous system as neuropeptide receptors.

There are a lot of nasty side effects, too. In Mongolia they fed the mushrooms to their horses, which were not affected by the toxins, and then drank their milk or urine to get the hallucinogenic effect without the side effects.

You really don't want to think about trying this stuff. It will far more likely make you very ill rather than giving you an interesting experience.
