What to do if you are outside and a severe thunderstorm is approaching! You can't predict when the thunderstorm will approach. If you are boating or swimming, get to land, get off the beach, and find shelter immediately.Take shelter in substantial, permanent, enclosed structures, such as reinforced buildings. If there are no reinforced buildings in sight, take shelter in a car. Avoid tall structures such as towers, tall trees, fences, telephone lines, and power lines. Stay away from natural lightning rods, such as golf clubs, tractors, fishing rods, bicycles, and camping equipment.

Inside a metal (even mesh) container. It's called a Faraday cage. Electricity goes _around_ it, but not through the inside. At the Boston Museum of Science is a LARGE Van de Graaf generator that produces upt to 5 million volt sparks (well, it's turned down to only a couple of megavolts for the daily demos). The operator sits inside a metal "bird-cage" that is repeatedly hit by the man-made lightning. The only danger is to the ears: it's LOUD, so they wear earplugs.
If you're ever in the Boston area, it's a "gotta see!"

The safest place during a thunderstorm should be a place where there are no windows, skylights, or glass doors, which could be broken by strong winds or hail, causing damage or injury inside your house.

Let's assume you mean when you are outside, say camping or something. Natural caves or below rock outcroppings are good, if you have a mattress pad this is a good thing to sit on, it removes you from conducting the energy back to the earth. Places not to be are: in the water, high in a tree, or holding metal objects.
