I believe your referring to the responsibility of not being the object of someones emotional status, and thusly the reverse, not wanting to be in the dumps again because you feel some kind of crush, or love or some kind for someone. Loss of control is what this is about. Dating does not have to include love. It can be friendship. A kindred soul who understands your language, and is not in love with you, and your not in love with them. A co-conspirator in effect.
This can all change if you include sex. Sex can lead to love faster than a horse to water. If you want a loveless friendship, and no damage done, leave sex out of it. You'll have lots of friends. If you include sex in a relationship, it opens not only the possibility of love, but also jealousy, lies, deceit, and fowl play. All's fair in love and war. Sex stops many great friendships. Be careful

It's never too old. Lots of singles out there for you. You'll hopefully have learned from your past mistakes and experience and will be in a wiser, healthier relationship next time.

I say to have some fun. No need to stay home & do nothing, you are still young enough to go have a good time. If you happen to run into that special person then go for it. If not then just enjoy life.
