Is the COMMUNITY SERVICE, PUBLIC SERVICE beyond the unselfish, poorly appreciated service of our troops (and their suffering families) serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and points in between the only pure example left in America? Why is that so?

Anyone who works at their private enterprise job, works for the good of all. They provide valuable goods and services to their fellow man, as well as supporting their families and paying taxes and helping the economy grow.

But there are people as you describe, who do volunteer work, who work for social organizations. My sister works for the Alzheimer's Association, to help families cope with relatives who have Alzheimers. She does a lot beyond what she gets paid for. Many join the Peace Corp to help other countries.

There are people who will work just for the sake of helping others.

The would depend, in whole or in part, on which relative definition of 'good' one chooses to use...and how exactly one defines the rather nebulous term 'do-gooder'. One persons 'do-gooder' is another persons 'terrorist' or 'subversive', or in extremer instances....'lunatic'.
So basically...your question is "Why is the 'Way of the World' the way of the world?"
I think that you will find, with a bit of research, that such a question has defied a rational explanation for about as long as there has been a species known as 'Homo Sapiens'.

The wait continues for an irrational world to come to it senses...but I would not hold ones breathe, it could be a veeerrry long wait.

People who do good works as an important part of their life and daily activities do not brag or draw attention. They do the right thing because it IS the right thing, and they do it even if no one is watching.
Those who put down or insult those are lazy and arrogant. They scream about how things need to "Change", but it is always someone elses job to do it.....The only time they would do anything is to be "Seen" doing it.....And it's just for the Photo Opportunity...

The US military does, because it recognizes the threat.
