Instead of boiling your rice in water... Try using chicken stock or beef stock. This has much more flavor in it and will benefit the taste of your rice. But in general... you aren't doing anything wrong... most people use rice and pasta as a base of a more complicated dish. These starches give a nice body to support a meat or cream topping.

When you ccok your rice as a generilization you should use 2 parts water or stock to one part rice you should not have to drain your rice try cooking your rice using bayleaf, thyme, kosher salt, pepper and chicken stock this usually has excellent flavor also and when cooking your spaghetti salt the water first should taste like sea water this will give flavor to the pasta and help it from sticking to the bottom of the pan

Use a Basmati rice. It has a lot of flavor. Another trick cook your rice in chicken stock. You also need to salt the water when cooking rice and pasta.
To prevent sticking rice should be covered for entire cooking time and cooked on simmer, do not lift the lid till the time is up.

Hey. yeah i wasn't great at cooking rice either. And on top of that it takes a long time. So since i had to start cooking dinner for my family i had us buying minute rice. it is the best thing! just follow the instructions & you will have delicious white rice. they also have brown rice & jasmine rice varieties. i've tried success "boil in a bag" before & it was not very good. i recommend you try minute rice. it takes less than 10 minutes to fix completely. and if you're short on money then buy the dollar general brand minute rice it did just as good.

Instead of using water to cook your rice in, use broth like chicken or beef broth, You can also use soups like cream of mushroom, cream of chicken etc. just cook the rice the way you normally would then stir a can of soup and some milk into the rice. Are you using instant rice? If so, make sure you are using the same amounts of rice and liquid. If you want to cook a cup of rice, use one cup of water to cook it, add some salt and butter or margarine to the water also. Try different spices and seasonings, you can really cook rice in any liquid you like to make it taste better.

this is my no fail method in cooking rice:
use an equal amoung of rice and an equal amount of water plus some, meaning if you're cookind 1 cup of rice add 1 cup of water plus a little bit extra (1 tbsp), if you're cooking 2 cups of rice add 2 cups water plus 1/4 c water extra (as you increase no of cups of rice increase also the extra water).
put rice & water in pot with lid and turn the stove on high. when it starts to boil and the lid starts to move, open the lid a bit (leave the lid on askew) and put the flame down to low and cook till you see the rice on top as done.

Add salt to your rice water. About 2 tsp for 2 cups dry rice.
Remove rice from pot when it's done; soak pot in COLD water to loosen cooked-on rice.
re: Spaghettie... I assume you mean your noodles.... you need to salt that water, too. It should taste as salty as the ocean for good-flavored pasta.
