Try www.cyndislist.com/ships.htm#Lists. These are lists of ships that came to the US and Canada in the 1800's and sometimes before. They give, for each ship, the passenger's name, his/her occupation, age, family members, etc.
www.genealogy.about.com/oldoccupations (descriptions of old and obsolete occupations)
www.usgenweb.org/research/occupations.shtml (these are some of the old jobs listed):
AMANUENSIS--secretary or stenographer
BLUESTOCKING--female writer
BRIGHTSMITH--metal worker
BURGONMASTER--mayor of city
CHANDLER--maker of candles; grocery retailer
CHIFFONNIER--wig maker
COHEN--priest (descendant of Levi)
COLPORTEUR--book peddler
COSTERMONGER--fruit and vegetable peddler
CROWNER--coroner
FLETCHER--one who makes bows and arrows
HACKER--maker of garden hoes
(There were dozens more; had links to ship passenger lists, also.)
