Today's religion is not only in the world but of the world, which is completely backwards and why organized religion sucks and is dying. Be in the world but not of it.

Three reasons:

The church building must be big enough to hold the believers (and the pastor is ever hopeful that the flock will grow)

The church building is seen as the House of the Lord, and the Lord deserves the best.

Each sect (indeed each congregation within the sect) likes to show off its monetary resources.

'each church' doesn't...if you're talking about those mega-churches, some folks like that kind of thing. i won't presume to speak for them, although i would imagine that some people like the idea of large spaces in which to worship, a larger 'pool' of people to fill the spots in the choir, more services scheduled on any given sunday, and some of the 'added features' a large church can provide...as for me, i'll take my church small enough so i know everyone, and enjoy a more spontaneous type of worship...but always hoping to add more members...i've known some small churches that have become larger and ended up 'seeding' new churches...i think that is wonderful

Because the bigger church is more than just a church; it's an entertainment center with gymnasiums and conference rooms and concert halls and daycare centers and softball fields and.....
That's when I get irritated. It's like it's not enough anymore to focus on God's Word; we have to entertain the masses.

Churches who build bigger church buildings are usually doing so because the size of their congregation has out grown their current building.

Surprizingly they aren't just spending lots of money building a bigger building because they just felt like it.

Does that answer your question? ...or did you want to know why the number of people attending churches has grown?

That ones easy...because more people are becoming aware that THERE IS A GOD and HE LOVES THEM and IT'S TIME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT :-)

A lot of people dont even look twice at an anient rundown tiny church. If it is big and hard to miss more people will go than if it is hidden and small. For truly religious people however the place where you go to pray once a week doesnt matter but unfortunetly for some it does

It's a mystery to me. Our church use to be a nice small church where everybody knew everybody else. Now it takes up 3 city blocks and they are adding on again. This time they are putting in a full sized commercial kitchen and a gym. Somebody tell me what that has to do with worsiping God.

No one told you but the religion with the biggest churches wins heaven.

Those new "we made up our own denomination and call it a non denomination " churches only think they can give the Catholics a run for their money.

Ummm...maybe because more and more people keep finding the truth and join the church and churches need to be bigger to hold it's parishioners.

Organized religion is a business. Remember, we live in a material world! We all have to worship some of the material or die.
