It has played a big role, the hypocrites are in control, but should that make me forget my creator.

Which religion invented the gun, the rilfe, the machine gun, the flame thrower, the hand grenade.
Why does science get it's greast honors and funding from the people who make Dynamite, Simtex and Nitoglyerine, The Alfred Nobel foundation.

Wrong belief can have severe consequences here and hereafter. If you believe in some false religion or cult you can lose your eternal soul, hence religion can have eternal consequences.
If you believe right then your life here will be guided by the Holy Spirit of God and you will have happiness and purpose in your life here on earth, and hereafter you will have eternal life personally with Jesus Christ.

Religion has not killed any one it is people who believe that their way is the only way. If we would live in the way that we are directed Love one another and treat our neighbor as ourself.
Would you want to be talked too, treated, hit,
etc? Nor would I.

How many discoveries have been stifled because talented people were trapped in a religion and weren't able to make valueable contributions to society.

Millions, though atheism is catching up quickly.
More specifically, I'd say religion has killed no one, nor has atheism.
The desire to destroy the freedoms of some other group (such as the patriotic freedom of religion in the United States) has been the impetus to kill millions.
Is this your desire? Easy group to join.

It hasn't. It has saved and repaired more lives than those lost through misinterpretation and personal miss use.
