A computer virus is a small program that infects a computer without the user permission. It attaches itself to other files and quickly multiplies.
It is strongly recommended that you use an antivirus program on your computer and that you keep it updated. This will prevent any infection and clean your computer if it was infected previous to the install.

You are infected with a virus if:

* Your computer is very slow, stops responding, restarts or shuts down by itself from time to time.
* Your hard disk or the removable drives (floppy drive, CD-ROM, USB Flash) are inaccesibles or the files are corrupt.
* Unusual error messages appear.

In case your computer got infected, try the following:

* Get an antivirus program (if you don't have one already) See the Download antivirus page to get a free one.
* Update your antivirus
* Scan all your computer and delete, repair or quarantine the infected files.

If you have problems in eliminating viruses from your computer, you can also try one of the free tools available in the Other download page.

To keep your computer virus free:

* Have an antivirus program and update it from time to time (some even update automatically)
* Use a firewall. Download one from Download firewall page.
* Only download files from sources you trust.
* Don't open e-mail attachments, unless you know who sent it.
* For more protection you can scan your computer with online scanners provided free by some of the best companies. See the Online scanners page.
* Spyware may sometimes be mistaken as a virus. Read about spyware.

Spyware is a program with the main objective of monitoring users activities. But it can also steal private information, install unwanted software, redirect browsers to other websites than the ones the user wants to visit or even displays advertisements.

You are infected with spyware if:

* You see too much pop-up advertisements.
* Your browser has toolbars that you haven't installed.
* Your homepage has changed (and you can't change it back).
* Other settings have changed without your permission.
* Your computer is slow.

To get rid of spyware and keep your computer clean you have to use an antispyware or even more. You can download free antispyware software from the Download antispyware page.

Go here:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Run Housecall. It should remove the virus and spyware that have infested your machine. Then once you get the problem software off, you need to either update your existing Anti-virus & anti-spyware software. If you don't have any anti-virus & antispyware software (or the subscription has expired) go here:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5

Download all the security products on that page, install them, and then run update on them. Either way you go, once you've run housecall and updated your security software, run your security software to make sure housecall got everything. If both housecall and the stand alone security apps fail to resolve the problem, then you may need to reinstall the OS to remove the malware on your computer.

You need a firewall, whenever dealing with a P2P or file sharing network, I would suggest that you get Norton, because it tells you directly where you got the virus from , and Norton can delete the virus too.
