I highly suggest adopting from a breeder. However, buying a pup from a breeder can be much more expensive than you want, so next best choice would be the shelter. If you adopt from a shelter, you can learn most of the information about the pup before you get him. A lot of the time they get their shots and immunizations already at the shelter before being placed up for adoption. Also, this is much cheaper that getting it at a pet store. When you adopt from a pet store, I assure you that you won't get as much information about the pup as you want. Puppies at pet stores tend to be more sickly than pups at breeding kennels and shelters. Hope this helped! :)))

OH, AND YOU HEARD ALL THE PEOPLE...
SHELTER! SHELTER! SHELTER! SHELTER! SHELTER!

While you may feel sorry for the pet store babies with all the terrible puppy mill stories, please do not buy from a pet store. You are only supporting this despicable business. Adopt if you can!

You can go to any shelter, and in some states PetSmart hosts rescue groups on Saturdays!! You can adopt and shop for your new addition in the same place! Check with local rescue groups for locations and times where they might be having an event. Also, www.petfinders.org is a fabulous website - many organizations are compiled here and you can search by area, breed, size, age, etc!

Good luck!

It usually will benefit both of you if you get a animal from the shelter. Most of them usually know there being rescued and seem to be very appreciative of that. Mutts are usually less prone to hereditary diseases, also. Very hardy creatures. some might have a kink or two, but nothing a little love & patience can't cure. On the other hand....Pet store puppy's are usually in-bread, neglected and diseased puppy's raised in puppy mills, and have irreversible mental problems. It's very sad but when you buy a puppy there you are paying top dollar for a dog that should be classified as a non show quality animal, and your keeping puppy mills that abuse and neglect and breed dogs time after time that really ...should have a break from motherhood. You are keeping money in the pockets of unloving animal bussiness owners. If people stop buying puppies there maybe they will stop breeding on mass scale. Sorry for the ethical intoduction into a cruel reality. Buy a mutt. If you MUST have a purebred, buy from a small private breeder. IMO

better for who ? Certainly it's better for the dog in the shelter. Many dogs in pets store live an unhappy life and the consensus is they provide low quality puppy mill dogs. If you don't have a specific need in mind adopt from a shelter you'll be saving a life.

Try to adopt from a shelter. It will be cheaper, as they generally make sure the animals have shots and arrange for spaying or nuetering (usually, the adoption fee is 25-100 dollars). Pet stores, on the other hand, want to recoup the money they've spent on this, including food and shots, and make a profit, so their prices are generally higher. In addition, you'll be saving an animal from the risk of being put down because no one wants it.

The shelter, those dogs are always waiting for a good home, and are fixed and have all their shots. Dogs from a pet store are from breeders, usually come from poor living conditions, and usually are very sick. Google puppy mills and you will see the horrors in which these dogs come from. It's a waste of money and time. Why breed and buy when shelter pets die?

A shelter would be the kinder, more sensible thing to do. Besides, developed countries' shelters usually take such good care of the dogs and have so may breeds available that it's almost like a pet store. Check it out at least.

SHELTER!! Unless the "pet store" is PetCo or PetSmart or another pet store that contracts with the local shelter in the area. Dogs that go to pet stores (like the ones in malls) are typically from backyard breeders. Dogs at shelters typically are from people who can't or don't want to take care of them, from their un-neutered/spayed pets that "accidentally" got pregnant and they don't want the animals.

Don't support backyard breeders by going to a pet store. Support the animals in shelters who may be put to sleep if they don't find a home. Please - adopt a dog from a shelter.

The Shelter, because if they arent adopted in a certain amount of time, they are put down. but you have to be careful wth adopting from a shelter too because some of the dogs were taken frmo homes where they were abused which in some cases could make them aggressive.

i agree with these posts. NEVER get a puppy from a store. they are usually coming from puppy mills. horrible farms where the dogs are litterally bred to death and the puppies are taken away too early. they dont get adequate medical attention and it is so inhumane. just google it and see.

Dogs from the pound can be just as good if not better. Mutts are actually (typically) better because thier genetics are more diverse. Pure bred dogs are usually inbred a LOT, which can cause medical problems and retardation.

Also, 10 million dogs and cats are put to sleep every year in the US in shelters. They are inexpensive and all they want to in life is to be your best friend. Please Adopt!
