Fly.

Period.

Zacatecas is over 600 Miles from Riverside! It's almost the same as asking if you would drive from Riverside to Salt Lake City...!

You'll have more time at your destination, rather than wasting a day to get there and a day to come home...and potentially waiting in a HUGE line of icky traffic at the border both ways.

Fly.

Mexican police are notorious for pulling over Ameircan drivers and drumming up charges that can cost you a fortune.

Also, the roads aren't like in the US, you can be dirving down a highway that just stops. The locals knew to turn off 2miles back and drive through town, then pick up the highway on the other side.

I remember reading about some new toll road Mexico built from near the US border that costs a fortune to drive, even though it mirrors some nearby local highway that is free to drive.

Fly.

Fuel in Mexico is likely to clog your fuel injectors. extra fuel filters packed are a good idea. small towns and mountain roads are beautiful. If you can find a Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 1990 to 1994 that would be my choice to drive down there. Parts availability and locals than can change a starter motor and replace a fuel filter will prove invaluable. Get a american pathfinder and cut off the cat converters for the trip and weld them back on when you return. That way you can use leaded fuel and unleaded fuel..

I would not drive..... drove to guatemala once and had people lay in front of the car on the road in mexico, luckily we formed a caravan and one of the people was an experienced driver in mexico and told us that people will lay in the street so you stop and then people jump you. so, you run them over and don't look back. don't ever drive alone (1 vehicle.) stop and waysides and wait for enough people so that you look like a large group, then get going. I hear mexico is fairly rough right now, so you might be better off flying than spending alot of time on the road alone.

It would most likely be cheaper to fly. If you drive, you have to count the wear and tear on your car, which is a lot more than the cost of gas. But driving might be more fun.

Your American auto insurance is invalid in Mexico. You have to purchase Mexican insurance coverage.
