My dog is driving me insane. I've heard that collars that increase the intensity with the number of barks don't work well because they just teach the dogs to bark only two or three times. I want to stop it completely!

I like Innotek or Tri-tronics brands. I use E collars as a last resort after water bottles, hoses and throw chains do not work. There are many reasons dogs bark, try to minimise his exposure to what makes him bark. Obed trained dogs tend to bark less as they are used to obeying their boss. A well exercised dog barks less and one with lots of toys is happier. Chained dogs will bark out of frustration and having a bark collar on some dogs or some situations will make it worse or cause the dog to bite. Consult a trainer first b4 using one or you could ruin the dog. Maybe rehoming him would be a better idea? My trainer has most of her dogs debarked which means they still bark but so low toned it is hardly heard. She breeds CC and has many dogs. She has been debarking for about 20 yrs w/o any side effects. It is a humane solution.

I don't believe in shock collars. I think they're cruel and unnecessary. You could do just as well with a spray bottle of water. (Give the command "No Bark") Also, when the dog is sitting and being quiet, praise the dog ("Good Quiet") and give him a treat. Dogs don't bark for no reason. Figure out why your dog is barking, and you'll be able to solve your problem. (Does he need to go out? Is he hungry? Is he bored? Is there activity outside that he's warning you about?) After 10 years with my dog, I have learned that her behavior problems were really the result of my inexperience with training. You'll get it! Be patient!

Why don't you want to train your dog? Wouldn't it be wonderful to just give the command "quiet" and the dog immediately stops barking? But you would rather shock it? Don't use a shock collar, don't squirt the dog, don't swat it with a rolled up newspaper. Train it! Enroll yourself and the dog in a good obedience class and learn about dog behavior, how to teach your dog and in the end you will have a much better pet and a safer one.
