i have a ford mustang v6 and it has 85,000 miles on it. he said that i need my break pads changed and it will be 170 dollars with labor. does that sound right? but he said it might be more if i needed my rotors changed or something

the reason i'm asking is because i saw at Midas its only 89.99 but i don't know if that includes labor.

Original Equipment brake pads from Ford Motor Co are of a ceramic material, they are longer lasting, less dust and more expensive then your standard semi-metalic material. The local Ford dealer near us charges 105.00 for the original equipment replacement. Your mechanic can get the ceramic material from an aftermarket supplier and sell them to you for a reasonable price. The "book time for doing the job is about 1.2 hrs which at 65.00 per hour (avg) would be about 78.00 labor which would give them about 92.00 remaining for the cost of the brake pads. The main thing to remember in a good quality brake job is to use the "dealer recommended" material. If they call back and say you need brake rotors, first ask for the measurements and then ask them what the "machine to" specifications are. If his measurements are really close or less than the "machine to" spec, authorize the replacements but tell him you want to keep the old parts...say your husband wants to see them or something. Make sure you understand the warranty before you leave the store.

Most shops will machine the rotors and install premium brake pads and $170 sounds pretty reasonable after taxes. My shop charges that for doing a brake job with Motorcraft (Ford Aftermarket) parts... OEM will be $220 easy.

Midas charges $89.95 as all they do is change the pads and labor... no rotors or anything.. about a 20 minute job without machining.... The pads are considered installer grade and are roughly one step below premium pads (which are usually ceramics or performance pads)

You will most likely want your rotors either turned or replaced depending on the thickness of the rotor. There are also different grades of brake pads. Call a dealer and see what they will do the front brakes for. You may also try one of the brake repair shops listed in your yellow pages. Just make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Go with the ceramic pads for the longer wear. good luck.

No, your mechanic is being fair. Today when breaks first make a sound your in more trouble than you used to be. I took my F150 immediately to the shop at the first sound of trouble, and I still had brake pads, calipers, rotors and drum issues. Used to be a squeak and you just needed new pads, not with todays cars...My F150 was almost a K for the brakes with the dealer, so your guy is being fair.

Honesty is the main suitable coverage yet that doesn't pay the expenditures. If the Mechanic observed a power steerage fluid leak and priced the fix and you further fluid to make the noise flow away you solved the low fluid situation yet did not fix the reason. i don't choose to grant you the phantasm right here all mechanics are straightforward. 2nd evaluations have the automobile appeared at at yet another fix shop. in case you don't understand the project ask greater questions. i'll even practice the shopper precisely what i'll do and return any previous areas I replaced. yet another factor I fairly have had shoppers take there automobiles homestead and preform the fix I pronounced i could do and are available returned in to have me examine there paintings. this is only unfair notwithstanding it takes place all of the time. you recognize Mechanics grant there own strategies and are only like subcontractors working at that dealership. Pay there own scientific coverage and uniforms. I own almost $a hundred,000 in strategies straightforward! and have over 35 years journey. And nevertheless fairly earn approximately 50k a year.

i manage a "midas" and the price you are talking about is just a standard brake pads ,i would suggest upgradindg to ceramics which cost $139 this price includes pads and the labor to install them does not include machining rotors.if rotors need to be replace you could expect to pay about $300 total for rotors and pads

The only way to tell if you are paying too much is to take your car to another shop and ask for an estimate on having brakes done. You will always find someone to do them for less but is less always best. You could pay more than that if you take your car to the ford dealer where you will have professional technicians working on your car. They know what to do and have to be certified to work on cars. The shop you now go to may not be experienced and charge more just to make money. I always take mine to the dealer for the sheer fact that I know they are knowledgable, experienced and I can have the peace of mind that I wont have to worry that something isnt done correctly. My newphew got a job at Walmart doing tires and brakes and he never worked on a car before. So do you trust just anyone with your car? I dont think I would.

Midas charges $89.99 per axle (2 wheels). The $170 is probably for all four wheels, which is reasonable for a brake job.

if you are kinda of like good friends he is only charging for the parts and lil' bit of labor also it is according to where he is getting his parts from because ford isn't cheap on ford parts...see the reason is that the ford corporation doesn't want the like shop mechanic doing the work they want your car to burn your pockets
