Here is the thing about the cocktail hour ... after the ceremony and so close to dinner, your guests are going to be very hungry. In my experience, the stationed food is always the first to go - it is easy to access, it is available and there are no limits. Your guests lose all sense of their appetites and finish anything that is put in front of them - all of this points to the fact that you'll need 2-3 times as much to feed everyone and not look cheap if something runs out. If someone is passing items, they are pre-portioned and usually guests won't take more than one. If you choose that option, then you won't need as many pieces of each item. As for the drinks - i would definitely suggest setting up an open bar in 2 different locations and letting the bar tenders deal with pouring, etc.

I would go with the open bar if you can keep the line short. I prefer the hand passed appetizers. More time mingling and interacting.
Buffet with servers would have been more money at my wedding and I based on my own experience I over eat at the buffet and then don't care about dinner.

It's really a stylistic choice but waiters cost $$$$$$. If you're going to have an open bar anyhow, I would just save yourself some dough and have a appetizer buffet.

If you are having a very formal event, then yes have the waiter carry them around. Otherwise, for the typical.. even really nice wedding, I would just let the guests get what they want. If it isn't a black tie affair, people might think it is a little weird and not know how to react.

depends on how formal or informal the wedding is. and if there is a waiter service fee or not. hey if the waiter service is free then go for it. have them go to your guests instead of having the guests go to a table and it be all crowded in one area. also if there is waiter service then your guests can mingle and drink instead of getting in line for hors d oeurves.

I think having it all on a table would be better, cuz then guests can see the entire selection and choose what they want. You might want to think about providing beer and wine and then if they want something else you can have a cash bar unless you can afford to pay for all their drinks. Congrats on your upcoming marriage.

I've been to occassions with both options and if your family and friends are anything like mine - stick with putting them out so the guest can serve themselves! There's going to be Unlce Charlie who won't get served one kind and Cousin Marcy who will complain that the same server kept coming to her with the same appetizer. No, it's better to let them get their own!

In my opinion, throw the appetizers out the window all together and just have the open bar & dinner. No need really for the extra....its just money outta your pocket.
Congrats!!

I think the best option is passed appetizers and an open bar people can approach on their own.

It doesn't matter how you do the appetizers. But if you're serving alcohol, have an open bar (or just wine and champaigne served at dinner).
