How old is he, and has he been checked by a vet for things like parasites? I suggest a vet visit, and if all comes back ok, try giving him Nutrical or Nutristat. They are both high-calorie nutrionally complete paste-style dog foods that can be ordered on line. To use to supplement thin dogs, just start feeding a 1/4 teaspoon a day and work up to a whole teaspoon if needed. This is potent, so be sure to not overfeed.

Depending on the breed, some dogs are very thin. If this is not the case with your particular breed, I recommend getting a fecal test done to check for intestinal parasites. If there are parasites present, the vet will give a dose of worming medicine and the problem should disappear within a week or two. If there are no physiological problems, I recommend giving the dog some goat's milk twice a day along with a high-quality puppy food. I recommend foods that have no by-products, corn or preservatives. This will give him a greater chance to absorb vital nutrition to keep him at a healthy weight. Also, you can crack a raw egg over his food and stir it in a couple of times a week.

Is it a Whippet?
You have not mentioned the breed so it's hard to make a decision.. As long as the dog is eating the reccommended food for his age, breed and size I would not worry. You may want to consult the vet as they should be the only opinion you need to respect. Most of us people here are not vets. I would suggest you look your breed of dog up on the web. Then email the sites that breed the dog. These people are very knowledgable and will give you good advice for free.

Take him to the vet and make sure there isn't a medical reason. So dogs are just skinny and can be any breed. Just feed him what you would normally and be glad you do not have the opposite problem.

Take him and a fresh poop sample to the vet. There are many reasons dog do not gain weight, are you feeding him a top brand of food or ol' Roy crap? Has he been wormed? Is he on heartworm preventative? Is he young or a GSD? Gsds are prone to enzyme insufficiency. Young dogs are often thin. Is he very old? Old dogs often lose weight. The first step is your vet tho.

if you are feeding him a food with some sort of filler as the first ingredient then he is proably not get the right nutrients.switch to a higher protein dog food. (also try feeding him from the table if you dont already. human food has alot more fat than dog food.)

What breed is he? Some dogs are naturally skinny, like Whippets, or Grey Hounds, etc. Also, try giving him a different type of food and ask your vet if there is something wrong if all else fails.

Well for one thing you don't want a fat dog, they are really lazy. If you want it to get bigger then get good dog food, make sure it gets exercise, but not too much, and try new foods and dog treats.

How old is he, how much do you feed him and are you feeding him good quality dog food? Has he been de-wormed, as that is a very common cause of this.
