Very good question. Another reason that it has stood the test of time is because it is the Word of God. The prophesies of the Bible have all come true and some are still yet to be fulfilled. When God says heaven and earth may pass away but His Word will not. When God says the Scripture cannot be broken. When God allows the Dead Sea Scrolls to come forth to prove the accuracy of His Word, then how much more does it take for unbelievers?

Jesus showed us how powerful the Scriptures are when He told Satan 3 times, "It is written." Even Satan believes the Bible.

There are many sacred texts older than the bible about which you could ask the same question. Consider the Hindu Rigveda and the Zorastrian Avesta. Yet, people who do not follow these faiths mock them as not being true. So the real question is, what makes a holy book true? You seem to hint that it's because the holy book has meaning in the lives of those who believe it. It has power and force. It brings beauty and empowerment to the lives of the believers. In other words, it is effective.

So you're asking, "Is the crucifixion fiction"? "Is the bible libel"?

Great question! This is an honest one many people fall 'pray' to. Officially it's called "Argumentum Ad Populum" (Latin: "appeal to the people"), which assumes that something must be true since the majority believe in it. Since most of the world believes in God, he must exist goes the argument. While intuitively this might make sense, think back to the time of slavery in the South, or Hitler's Nazi Germany to see the fallacy of this line of thought.

If 50 million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing
— Anatole France

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence that it is not utterly absurd; indeed, in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible.
— Bertrand Russell

It has never mattered to me that thirty million people might think I'm wrong. The number of people who thought Hitler was right did not make him right... Why do you necessarily have to be wrong just because a few million people think you are?
— Frank Zappa

In questions of science the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.
— Galileo Galilei

That which has been believed by everyone, always and everywhere, has every chance of being false.
— Paul Valéry, (1871-1945)

One of the proofs of the immortality of the soul is that myriads have believed in it. They have also believed the world was flat.
— Mark Twain

The fact that there is a general belief in a future life is no evidence of its truth.
— Clarence Darrow

Et si omnes ego non -- Even if all, not me.

Commander Lock: “Not everyone believes what you believe.”
Morpheus: “My beliefs do not require that they do.”
— From the movie: “The Matrix Reloaded” (5/15/03).

The absurdity of a religious practice may be clearly demonstrated without lessening the numbers of people who indulge in it.

The bible can be fictional and still be true. It's just true for certain values of 'true'.

I don't think that anyone would argue that Spiderman is anything but fictional, but that doesn't mean that the message of 'with great power comes great responsibility' is not true.

Sometimes fictional stories, allegories and metaphors can be used to teach a lesson, illustrate a philosophical point, or highlight a moral choice.

If you look at the metaphorical truths and philosophical ideas of the bible, it is quite possible that they are true and meaningful even if the exact literal truth of some of the stories within the bible didn't actually happen literally the way they have been written down and translated as having happened.

"Do unto others" is a good philosophy regardless of the divinity of the dude what said it.

So your basis that something is true is because it still exists today? Lots of documents exist today that are older than the bible and especially religious ones. Do you believe those too?

Have you ever heard of learned behavior? It happens when a child observes their parents doing something and that child too does what the parent did. If you are raised by parents who beat you when you have children the percentage is high that you will beat your children. If you don't believe me then ask me why do people like the Chicago Cubs? They have sucked since time began but people are feverent believers in that team. It's because their parents were fans and their parents parents.

All it is is learned behavior. Teach your kids to question everything and find answers on their own and soon enough they will discover the actual truth and not the delusion.

There is some truth in it, but there is also alot of fiction. The original Bible is not the one you know today. The original work came from the Egyptians.

They really didn't start putting fiction in it until the time of King James.

Alot of scripture in the Bible is meant to control the masses by those in power. In those days if you did not follow their religion you were sentenced to death. As time evolved from generation to generation you now have a mass of people who do not question the truth behind it.

People are easily fooled. The scriptures have been given more and more credibility over time only because they have been accepted by the elite and the majority. There are lots of things that people believe that simply aren't true... or at the very least have insufficient evidence to support their claims. Like the Bible.

Have you read the illiad and the odessy? Do you believe them to be works of absolute truth?

If the writings combined to make the bible were all the work of god... then why was so much left out at the council of nicea? Doesn't that nullify the whole word of god thing if man edits the book for its own purpose?

Don't ignore the potential minds of humans in the past. There were greek, egyptian and other poets who were writing fiction on par with the bible hundreds to thousands of years before the bible.

precisely. i do no longer think a lot of something from the Bible different than turn the different cheek. i do no longer think the introduction tale, Noah's Ark, Armageddon, etc. besides the indisputable fact that, I see it as a e book and guarded loose speech. i do no longer want to examine it yet others do. that's their top. I in simple terms want them to offer me and others the liberty to examine what we could like, too.
