How is it possible to say that this verse calls for terrorism?

Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits, for Allah does not love transgressors. 2:190

Look at the words. It says to fight those "who fight you". It says to fight only when somebody is fighting you. It doesn't say to whip out a weapon and start fighting for no reason. It says to defend yourself. It also says not to go overboard. Just defend yourself.

Can you please tell me why this is commonly quoted as a call to kill any unbeliever?

I agree with you fully. People are twisting the Quran's beautiful words to fit what they think.

Peace.

People see what they want to see, its called arrogance. These people will quote anything in the Quran with the word 'fight' or 'kill'... They refuse to believe that Quran requires in dept analysis, they don't want to know the meaning behind it, the ayah before or after it, or even the reasoning behind the whole surah (chapter). People seem to use their common sense less and their haste in proving a religion wrong more.

Fear of the Unknown Perhaps?

After Sept. 11, Islamic leaders from around the globe condemned the actions of the 19 hijackers, all of whom were Muslim members of Bin Laden’s terrorist group, al-Qaeda. Since then, Muslim leaders have worked to educate the world about their religion, Bedier said, but five years later, many of America’s roughly 7 million Muslims still contend with open hostility.

A poll by the Pew Research Center in 2005 might help explain why. The poll, conducted after last year’s subway bombings in London, indicates that tolerance of the Islam is connected to a person’s party, faith and familiarity with the religion. The poll asked 2,000 adults about their impressions and knowledge of the Islamic faith. Though the survey showed some improvement in those impressions in the last few years, 36 percent of respondents said they believed Islam “encourages violence.”

When asked to describe their opinion of Islam, 36 percent replied “unfavorable,” up from 34 percent in 2003. And one in four said their opinion of Muslim-Americans is unfavorable.

Roughly twice as many conservative Republicans as liberal Democrats — 49 to 25 percent — said Islam is more apt than other religions to encourage violence. About half of white Evangelicals said the same. At the same time, however, a majority of respondents said they felt unfamiliar with Islam: 36 percent said they knew “not very much” about the religion and 30 percent said they knew “nothing at all.” Those numbers have stayed relatively static since 2001, according to the poll.

It's going to depend a lot on how people who see themselves as Islamic use the verse. Many do not see it as a call to arms, but some clearly do.

Do they take Salman Rushdie as one who fights against Islam, and in what way(s) is it legitimate to fight against him?

Or do they take me, a non-violent atheist who would be happier if there was no religion, including Islam, in the world?

I guess it depends how you define someone who is fighting you. Bill Clinton did try to kill Osama with cruise missiles & I'd say that counts.

Google "atrocities against muslims" and you get about 1.5 million hits. Take your pick. ANyone who is trying to invent a reason - plenty of choices.

i assume that i'm a sort of apologists. First, i've got self belief that what's written is precisely what the author of this e book believes. It says "and in the event that they would be taught something, enable them to invite their husbands at abode: for that's a disgrace for females human beings to talk interior the church." this would not point out that he's in any respect speaking in user-friendly terms some woman preaching. It says "ask their husbands", not inform them or instruct them. Its especially evident it ability that if she has questions that she shouldn't ask them, yet wait to invite her husband outdoors of the church construction. it style of feels quite sparkling to me, and that i can not think of somebody getting yet another meaning out of it and not utilizing countless twisting and spinner being in contact. in spite of the undeniable fact that, i've got self belief that the author'S opinion is what's written here. not a holy commandment. in accordance to tradition and social taboo on the time this would completely genuine looking. plenty so it became right into a rely of course to the author that it would quite be a holy command. yet, for the period of right this moment that is not smart and in actuality does harm, in my view at a time whilst women human beings can not arise with the money for to be taken much less heavily in any way because of the fact she became into born woman. Paul concept it became right into a competent thought. I, for my section, doubt that God concept it became right into a competent thought.

I wonder why they seem to continually ignore that 'but do not transgress limits' part.

Wouldn't killing other people be one of those limits you aren't supposed to trangress? Or maybe that's just me.

Good question. I agree...it says "defend yourself from unprovoked attack". It does not say "kill those who don't believe the same as you do".
