I hit a car yesterday. The claim total is 840.00 and they would like me to pay for a two day car rental out of pocket. I don't feel that I was at fault, but I don't want my rates to go up if I claim this accident. Do rates automatically go up if you have one claim on your insurance. I also want the other drivers insurance to be aware of the accident if my insurance company pays for it. Any suggestions?

In most states, if you hit the car you are at fault. Depending on how long you have been with the company and how long you have been accident free you your policy may or may not go up. My husband was in an accident, his first in 10 years and the claim went thru a company we had been with for 5 years, no increase. My Mom, just the opposite.

Well, whether or not you feel you were at fault, you very well could have been. If the other car was parked, you were at fault. If the other car opened their DOOR into you, THEY are at fault. If the other car was in FRONT of you, YOU are at fault.

Rates don't automatically go up with one claim - some companies have "first accident forgiveness". Also, in most states, the company has to pay out a certain amount (which varies by state, from $1,000 to $2,000) before the accident is "surchargable".

The other driver's insurance isn't going to CARE about this accident, if you're 100% at fault, but they can easily look it up on the renewal CLUE report.

You should sit down and talk about the situation with YOUR AGENT for personalized info.

Many places have a one accident per two years forgiveness policy. You do not feel it was your fault what does the police report show that is the key. If you exchanged insurance information believe me the other persons insurance knows about it and most likely have already contacted yours, who will contact you in the next day or two

It is likely your rates will go up. Rates will not go up until you are ready for your renewal -at which time your claims history will be evaluated.
