If you are willing to spend at the $250 range, or it might be a litte more, the best restaurant in NY is Per Se in the AOL restaurant. However you will need about a 3 month range before to get a reservation.
Other great restaurants are, one I haven't thought of in a while, the Lever House, in the Lever Building, midtown.
March, small restaurant on Eastside in the 50's. Daniel.
Always the great standards, Gotham Cafe, Grammercy Cafe, and Union Square Cafe.
You can also always check out Zagats, they have a page for the best restaurants in NY.

Zanzibar.

It's located on West 45th Street and 9th Avenue.

Its Mediterranean food. Lots to choose from and the drinks (non alcoholic as well) are good.

They play great music and the seating space is large so you are not looking in the face of the patrons at the next table. You have room to relax, eat and be merry.

Prices range from $5-9 for appetizers to large platters for groups of 3-4 people that start at $15 & up.

Worth the trip.

Accessible by most trains at Time Square.

Oh with that price range I can recommend some truly amazing places, like Daniel(Bewteen Park Avenue and Madison Avenue), Tamarind, it's Indian, and amazing! Also Ribot, Russian Samovar, and Blair Perrone(it specializes in steak but has other great stuff too, I would know i'm a vegitarian). My favorite of these are Tamarind and Daniel so I hope you get to try both. Have fun!

Fiorello's They have the best food and desert! Some super stars have all been to that restaurant. It's across the street from Lincoln Center, so it's a very cultured environment.
