I recently put my 1997 MK3 ford fiesta in for an MOT and one of the propblems was apparently the bushes needed replacing, but im not sure whether the garage was just looking for some more work of whether there being legit about it.
I was wondering if their was a way that i could check myself to see if they were just completely lying or if their was some truth behind what they were saying.
Is their certain things i can look for, for it to fail its MOT, and where would i look.

Thanks.

MOT tests are carried out to standards laid down.

MOT testers are regularly assessed to ensure they are carrying out the tests to the correct standards. This is done by an inspector simply turning up and watching the registered tester carry out the inspection and ensuring that items passed or failed do in fact meet the requirements laid down.

MOT testing stations are required by law to have a customer viewing area from which you can watch the job being carried out.

If something fails and you ask at the time then normally they will show you exactly what the problem is.

I suspect that the bottom arm bushes are what has failed. They do deteriorate and split. They need to be pressed out and new ones fitted. Far cheaper than having new bottom arm(s) fitted.

If you believe that the failure is wrong and it is just the garage trying to get work then you can appeal - the garage will be able to supply you with the details of who to contact. An MOT test centre will also have a notice on display giving details of what to do if you do not agree.

If you do appeal a test failure then another test will be carried out at a different garage with another technician.

He will not know the reason why it has been failed.

It it will also be inspected by a ministry inspector who will be a qualified motor engineer to confirm the findings.

Reputable garages do not need to fail vehicles to get work.

MOTs are generally a British thing.... In proper English alternators have BRUSHES and aren't part of the test, and suspension does indeed have BUSHES...

Language problems aside the garage will almost certainly be right. You DO know what FORD stands for? Fix Or Replace Daily! I'd b astonished if they were OK on a 10 year old car of any make let lone a Ford!

There are set standards for the mot test. if they were after your money, it would be better for them (in case you appealed) to put down the wear on the bushes as an advisory note. as most people have the advisory items completed for peace of mind.

To be fair though on a car over 9 years old, its very likely that the suspension bushes have worn.
Its also likely you havent noticed as if you drive the same car for a long period you get used to the knocks and rattles, and even when the bushes are completely knackered it can be hard to tell on an old car.

i doubt that the tester is telling porkies mate, for a fiesta that old to fail on just those you are doing well, if you thin k that you are copetent enough why not do them your self you will need a large vice to press them out and the new ones in, if not i think you are looking at an hour and a half labour and parts which should be about £5 each or so.

Come on man, the car is 10 years old and worn bushes is just fair wear and tear. It's no big deal to have them fixed..It'll save you tyre wear for a start and the car might even begin to run straight on the road again instead of pulling to one side.. (it is, isn't it?)

which bushes? front wishbone rear bush, front/rear top suspension?
its a 10 year old fiesta, most of them have been battered everywhere with little looking after.
emissions could be lambda sensor, could be hole in the exhaust or the engine may be past its best!

if you are talking about the brushes in your alternator, well is your battery remaining charged??????? if yes i would say they are ok. are you talking about the bushings in the front end. ??? does your car shake wobble and roll down the road or does it move smoothly down the highway? if it bounces and rocks and rolls like a farm wagon and steers poorly i would say you need your BUSHINGS replaced.
