Because your dog views your house as "the yard". Open spaces (house or yard) are just areas in their minds. When our dog Lacy was being trained, we kept her in the kitchen with the doors closed during the day. This area became her "small yard." When the doors of the kitchen were opened after we got home, the livingroom and the rest of the house became a "bigger yard." The actual back yard was just an extension of the "big yard" in the house.

During the day we left a pad for her to do her business on. In her mind, that was the "spot" that she was to go on.

Your dog thinks where he/she goes now, is the "Spot" to go. You must retrain him/her to the "spot" you want it to go.

This could go a bit deeper than traditional dog training, however if you have let your dog get away with this type of behavior and are suddenly asking him/her to change, you will need to dedicate time and effort to re-train or train in the first place. On the other hand, quite often dogs cannot have a bowel movement if they are under any type of stress. Has your dog experienced anything very stressful in the outdoors or has your dog been stressed outside for most of it's life and it is now getting worse.

I do dog behavior training and have come across highly trained dogs who suddenly start defecating in the home and not outside. After observing, the dog has experienced some type of stress or anxiety outside of the home that was never dealt with properly....

I'm guessing that implies she has them inside now. Some dogs unlearn their potty training and need a refresher course. I'd crate train her. When you take her out of the crate, take her outside immediately and praiser her and give her treats for doing it outside. Keep doing this until you feel you can trust her in the house again.

Because it has learned that it can do it in the house and not get corrected. You need to learn about dog behavior and how to properly train your dog. This will give the knowledge and tools to apply proper behavior correction.
