first you need a good casting rod like a beach caster.

Lug worm or squid/crab for bait ask at the bait shop on how to attach your bait. perhaps even a tracer line set-up.

Medium to heavy weights depending on your casting skills.

Get to the beach about 1 hour before high tide.

good luck

Location, location, location. Try to find the hot spot. The beach is vast. A lot of water. On Long Island, NY, there is 230 miles of beach. Where in the heck could the fish be? That's the secret. You have to find them to catch them. As far as hooks, a 8/0 or 9/0. Other fish like mackerel or shiners make the best bait.

When I used to fish I used squid as bait - cast out as far as you can and use a tube stuck in the sand to support your rod while you wait for a bite!

get a beach caster, dig your own lugworms or find razorfish holes at low tide ( they look like keyholes in the sand, a drop of sand makes them surface.) Also check your line more regularly as crabs tend to nick your bait (gobsh*tes). have a great time and save me a sea bass : )
