There are a lot of variables. It's hard to predict with any certainty. Factors such as unit, location, operational needs and the soldier's speciality all can come into play. When it comes to the military, the words of one of my early drill instructors come to mind - "Be flexible."

The vairable is always there and can be shorten or extended. My son was in Iraq for two years and the first time home instead of 13 month it turned out to be 12, the second time it was extended a bit!

i don't know about soldiers, but i can tell you Sailors have had it happen.
The Ike (Uss Eisenhower) strike group was extended by a month.
word on the street is, the Army is extending like none other. Thank god for the Navy, we go a max of maybe 8 months out to sea, which is worse than the Army doing 15, trust me. Try sleeping on a tiny *** rack, working 84 hours a week, roasting in a hot *** ship, loud noises night and day, crazy people, thieves, etc.
It gets nuts.

there is generally a time limit that a solider can serve as little as 6 months to two years in a warzone i believe but the pentagon has abandoned it many times. after 2 years a solider has to be sent home but a soilder can be home for 30 days before the pentagon can send them back out into combat. they can extend or shorten as much as they want just as long as that solider gets sent home for atleast a month after 2 years. i believe
