People all over the United States are craving for jobs. Many are already taken by illegals. What could possibly be the point in making them learn english? Wouldn't this mean more jobs lost to illegals immigrants?
What do you think? Opinions are welcome

Our tax documents are printed in over 30 different languages. Do you see the picture here. Yes, I think that immigrants should have to learn english!! It should be mandatory!! Oh and by the way, the jobs that the immigrants have are the jobs that most people do not want because it is hard labor!! We as a society has gotten so lazy!! The immigrants are usually farm workers, do you want to work on a farm in the hot sun? I didn't think so

Immigrants don't need to be forced to learn English. They are already learning English because they are smart enough to know that bilingualism is an extra employable skill. And each new generation speaks English better than the preceding one. That, in addition to their superior work ethic, accounts for their success in the job market. Now, if only we could persuade the kids to keep and formalize their native languages as well. I have had a number of first and second grade students who are trilingual (Mixtec at home, Spanish in the neighborhood, and English at school). Kids who translate and kids who tutor have been shown to have higher IQs for that reason.

Because the language of America is, supposedly, English. Would I be expected to learn Spanish if I decided to emigrate to Mexico? Would I expect the Chinese to serve me in English, French or whatever language I speak should I decide to move to China?

Last time I checked, I didn't see too many government services offered in any other language than Spanish, in Mexico.

If you're not going to deport illegals, or move them into some sort of rotational program where they don't live in the US all the time, then you're going to have to live with them, and that includes being able to converse with them at a functional level. Either every American can learn every native language of every illegal in the US - Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Persian, Canadian (just kidding), etc, etc, - or, you can ask them all to learn English.

Really, which of those sounds a more practical solution?

Why should we have to learn Spanish for them? They are the ones that came here, not the other way around. And any wise person would learn the language before they move to any country. They should learn english so they can get along here without a lot of hassle. Also, they should be respectful to the individuals here already, and they are not.

English needs to be a binding factor in the country. If you do not speak english, then you will be segragated because you cannot communicate with the nation. By not making people speak english they will form their own communities (which they have) and they will no welcome natural Americans in because of the language diffence (which they do). In essence they are creating a subculture within our borders that is not American and that will create a division. Like the pledge goes, "United we stand. Divided we fall." Let not language be the division.

I think they all aspire to speak English, its necessary to speak English to be very successful in America and they know it. If you want proof, look at 2nd generation Americans, they all speak English, their parents make sure of it, if their parents didn't it was probably because they couldn't learn it. (I often see young kids translating for their immigrant parents)

Its not that easy for an adult to learn a new language, especially one who has a poor education. They speak Spanish because they know it and its easier to communicate that way.

Why do people care so much about what languages others choose to speak? Cut them some slack, if they are willing to work for you, accept their help and be happy.

Go point, but we don't have to worry they don't want to learn English. They think we will learn their language because there will be more of them then us.
Beside being uneducated they live in fantasy land.

If you went to Germany, for example, would you expect the populace to learn English or would you learn German?
When in Rome, speak Italian;Give unto Cesare, etc., etc.
Would you be willing to go to Iran and not learn the language, if you wanted to live there and work there and take advantage of all their social programs?
Wise up and smell the garbage.
