Then you have a weak mind. Not all of us are that way. What do atheists live for? Life. Are you saying that theists live for death?

Exactly why people choose to believe. We psychologically can't handle the fact that we are here for no reason at all. Atheists either made peace with that fact and do just that what other mammals are put on earth to do; eat, drink, feed, sleep and procreate, and occasionally being murdered by another animal higher up the food chain. Nothing more. Or they simply think that Science is a way to not believe in a religion, in which case, they live for Science.

Which isn't all that bad, if you think about it...

The fact that you don't know what you have to live for without some construct of your imagination demonstrates how religion robs people from examining the true meaning of life and your true purpose. This is the main reason why I visit these forums to discuss my atheism... I want you to really examine the tough questions that most believers try to avoid. You know that there is something fishy about religion... or else you would not be here discussing religion at all and trying to get affirmation on the "testimony" of others. If everyone else told me the sky is red, I would still know that it's blue.

I hope you figure it out before it's too late for you.

Man was given conscience, something no other animal has. However, with this conscience came its limitation. Man could not fathom that one day he would be no more. So he invented the "afterlife" to help him cope with the thought of not existing. The truth is, when you die, you cease to exist. That is all. Live your life to make the Earth better for future generations, that is the only way to live on after you die.

I see your confusion. You don't have something to live for--you have something to DIE for. If you think about it, you spend most of your life thinking about preparing for death, and what happens afterward. Us Atheists believe that death is the ending of our individual existances, therefore we have to concentrate on life. Our families. Our jobs. Our hobbies and interests. Each day that passes brings us closer to our last. Thus, Atheists are the ones that have something to live for.

Life is far from empty for me, and I'm an Atheist. I actually feel more at peace about death since I'm no longer trying to lie to myself about it. Funerals, while still heartbreaking, are shorter-mourned because I've accepted that everyone I know--including myself--will someday die. I don't spend several months trying to convince myself that they are with God; I accept that they're gone, and treasure the time they spent with me.

Quite the opposite of your standpoint, I honestly feel I'd go insane if I were to attempt to convince myself that there is a God of love watching out for all of us. Actually, that'd be walking backward for me, since I started out as a Christian.

Life is not only much easier, but more peaceful now. Except for all the thumbs-downs I'm about to recieve for a sincere answer.

LIFE!!

It's not the destination that gives life its meaning, but the journey itself. I make a difference in the lives of those around me.

I am moral and ethical because it is the proper way to act, I am polite because I enjoy it and I was raised that way. (like a conscious decision to be that way). If there is an afterlife, maybe I make it, maybe not. But if there's not, then I didn't waste so much of my life obsessing over it.

Life is beautiful. It is what is. Believing in an afterlife doesn't mean that there is one.

The fact that you believe in this man-made God nonsense pretty much shows you're crazy already.

As atheists we can enjoy life because we are not burdened with guilt and fear. We know there's no such thing as Heaven so it follows there's no such thing as Hell. Therefore we have nothing at all to worry about, except enjoying our life

You, on the other hand . . !

to paraphrase lister in red dwarf:
'so what? everyone dies. you're born and then you die. the bit in the middle is called life'
i have loads to live for and try to make the most of life because it's the only one i've got. if i thought i was going somewhere afterwards i might not be so bothered about this one and just waste it waiting for my fluffy cloud.

thats because the human brain cannot concieve death. it is impossible to imagine nothingness. so mankind came up with a way to deal with the thought of dying. they created an afterlife to help ease the mystery of death. i prefer to live a good life to get along with the people i have to be around every day. not to appease a god who will supposedly rule my life after i die...

What is so wrong with non existence? Life is a temporary condition. For me, I live for my kids, my wife, my friends and hopefully I'll do something to help the human race survive.

I live for the joy of my finite life. I live to experience all the wonderful things that i am able to percieve in this world and also all the wonderful people. If you get to live forever what do you stick around here for?
