What the mob does not have priests promise - "Hodie mihi, cras tibi."
Starving Buddhists worshp an obese pig; Jews wanted a promised land; Christians wanted peace and wealth; Muslims want gardens, water, fruit, and clean women; Hindus will pretty much settle for anything better than what they have, hence 300 million deities.
In the whole of human history across the entire planet not one deity has volunteered Novocain. It is a telling omission.

I have noticed with certain people but not certain groups. I tend to switch mine around depending on the mood I'm in.

Yes, for Christians crosses and fish and other symbols of their faith are popular. Pagans like the pentacle and other such things, but the athiests really like the Jesus avatars for some reason, I think to poke fun at Christians. At least that is what it seems to me.

I've never really noticed that since I rarely pay attention to avatars. I just choose what I like which is usually a character from sci-fi or fantasy.

Mormons will often have a Temple. Catholics more often have a cross/ crucifix. Born again and southern baptist religions would be more apt to use a pictorial depiction of God or Christ.

Alot of Religions gravitate towards Avatars(Incarnations). Christian faith believes in all the prophets, Jesus, etc
Judaism believes in Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses, etc
Hinduism believes in the Avatars of Vishnu(Ten incarnations of Vishnu). The avatars symbolizes the scientific theory of evolution of mankind. (They are 1) Matsya, the fish, appeared in the Satya Yuga. 2)Kurma, the tortoise, appeared in the Satya Yuga. 3)Varaha, the boar, appeared in the Satya Yuga. 4)Narasimha, the half-man/half-lion appeared in the Satya Yuga. 5)Vamana, the dwarf, appeared in the Treta Yuga. 6)Parashurama, Rama with the axe, appeared in the Treta Yuga. 7)Rama, Ramachandra,( the prince and king of Ayodhya, appeared in the Treta Yuga). 8)Krishna (meaning 'dark coloured' or 'all attractive'), 9) Buddha (meaning 'the enlightened one') appeared in the Kali Yuga (specifically as Siddhartha Gautama),
10) Kalki ("Eternity", or "time", or "The Destroyer of foulness")
Bahai Faith believes in all prophets of all religions are from the same God. Bahai's believe in the progressive revelation, meaning like God sent the messengers(prophets) in the past, he will send messengers of God(among men) in the future too. Bahai's believe there is one God, and there is many prophets(messengers) from the same God, similar to different mirrors reflecting the Sunlight from One Sun to the earth in different places in earth.
Islam, has Sunni and Shi'a. Shi'a's believe in 12 Imams, of which 11 have been killed. 12th Imam is still alive but is alive in underground cave, and is beieved to arise and save the world(Which the Bahai's Believe is the Bab, who opened the Gate for Baha'u'llah the founder of Bahai Faith). If you'd like to read the book "The Thief in the Night" By William Sears(which reveals who the christians are expecting as the second coming of the christ is, and Shi'a muslims who believe in the Mahdi, the 12th Imam who is supposed to arise from the caves to save Mankind).
Sunni's Believe in People of Muhammad(or the clan of Muhammad). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunni
Zoroastrians believe in Zarathustra, and Shah-Bahram(the World Savior).
These are my 2 cents to your questions. Please feel free to individually investigate the truth for yourself. Be Blessed, and best of luck. Thank you for a valuable, indepth question.
