I tried to put the lyrics on here but didn't have enough space, so look them up and tell me what you think. I think of it as a Christian song, saying what would you do if that person you were treating like dirt was God in disguise! Wouldn't that make you feel terrible? Anyway. I don't think that's the way the song was "supposed" to be interpreted but I was just curious to see what you all thought!

It wasn't Alanis, but Joan Ozbourne.

It's maybe not a Christian song so to say, but rather a "be kind to each other" song. Golden Rule, if you will, or perhaps even Great Commandment.

Nice song. Very human.

The song was meant as a rhetorical question in order to inspire debate, discussion and even a deepening of faith: what if God was one of us?

Like many things, it can be taken any number of different ways: God is just like me (so therefore I, and others like me are right), anytime you do something to another human being, you do it to God, God suffers along with its creation on the road 'home', etc etc.

The song is primarily written from a Christian perspective ("Would you want to see, if seeing meant that you would have to believe, in things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints, and all the prophets?) but the arrangement of the words allows one to consider which 'Jesus' the singer is talking about. Jesus as a historical figure and Jesus as a flesh-and-blood person are two different beings altogether, since history allows another to 'speak' on the absent person's behalf.

Again, a song about debate, discussion and faith, at least from my perspective.

First of all the song was sung by Joan Osborne on her Relish CD.

And if you are looking for Christian music that is not the CD for you.

That song adds some spice to mold into the current thoughts of humanity. Jesus has spoken about this: Something like "whatever you have done to them you have done it to me".

It is really a good song without being identified to any religious group.

Joan Osbourne sang that, not Alanis Morissette.

If God had a name
What would it be?
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him
In all his glory
What would you ask
If you had just one question?

Yeah yeah God is great
Yeah yeah God is good
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God had a face
What would it look like?
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints and all the prophets

And yeah yeah God is great
Yeah yeah God is good
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

Trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody callin' on the phone
'cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

Yeah yeah God is great
Yeah yeah God is good
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home

Like a holy rollin' stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home

Nobody callin' on the phone
'cept for the Pope maybe in Rome...

That wasn't morissette. I think it was a song about being nice to people, just as a metaphor.

The song was written by Prince and I think he's a Jehovah Witness.
