Usually cats learn their toilet habits from their mothers if they weren't separated too early, but if this is not the case they may just need a little encouragement. You need to place the litter tray in an appropriate place (somewhere vaguely private and away from their food) and introduce them to it. You may need to pop the cat in the litter box when you see it about to go, and if it poos anywhere else, move the poo to the box. This isn't usually necessary however.
As for fleas, you need to pop into a vets to get some appropriate treatment. Don't bother with any of the stuff you can get in shops - most of it's cheap rubbish that doesn't work! I recommend Frontline Plus, which is a spot-on application - drops that you apply to the skin on the back of the neck.
You need to use flea treatment monthly even if your cat doesn't yet have fleas, as they are hard to get rid of once present - better to prevent them! If the cat already has fleas you will need to spray your house with something from the vets as well, as the fleas will be in the environment too.

I learned this, cause I had to do it with my kitten. Lock the cat in the bathroom with newspaper all over the floor. Put the litter box in a corner. Leave the cat in there, everytime it goes on the newspaper, use a tissue to pick up the poop and put it in the litter box. Then put the kitten in the litter box and you show them how to bury it, by moving their paws for them. This only took about 12 hours, and my cat was potty trained. As for fleas, I would buy the Advantage stuff from the vet, and make sure to buy some flea carpet powder. Vacuum everything, dust, and wash everything the cat has come in contact with. Then give them the treatment. Worked for me. Good luck

Well, for the fleas, go to the vet and get Frontline Plus and maybe a flea dip. The vet can also tell you how old your kitty is.
I can't help you with the litter training thing - all of my cats were already litter trained - but I'm sure someone will give you an answer soon :)

Actually, the best product for cats is Revolution. It prevents fleas, intestinal parasites, ear mites and most importantly, heartworms. Even if she is indoors. The vet I work with got our clinic and clients involved in a study regarding heartworms in cats. The results made me want to put Rev on my cats every day. BTW, there is currently no treatment for heartworms in cats and the only clinical symptom is acute death.
P.S. Flea dips are archaic and can be dangerous for cats.
Sorry for my soap box moment, hope this helps!
