What is it specifically... and are there any religions (other than Scientology) that enforce it?

Not to my knowledge. Scientology is the only religion that I have heard of that practices this.

A silent birth means refraining from excessive vocalization during the process of giving birth. In Scientology, it is usually done without the inclusion of pain medication.

Firstly this is not a correct description and is a media created lable for the use of something called Preventative Dianetics.
Secondly it is not in anyway enforced by the Scientology religion . It is simply a choice based on reducing the amount of potential post birth problems for both mother and baby during what is a pretty traumatic and very painful experience for both.

The idea is to keep the amount of noise to a minimum and
particularly verbal or spoken words from Dr's or those attending.
This principle is not just applied to birth but also applied around unconscious or semi conscious individuals during moments of pain, illness or physical or emotional upset.
The reason why is covered fully in the book "Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health" Chapter 10 "Preventative Dianetics"

The idea and research behind Silent Birth comes from
L.Ron Hubbards book Dianetics the modern science of mental health.

What it is basically is that, when giving birth, the room which this is occuring and its surrondings be as quiet and peaceful as possible. So in this way, both mother and child have the most peaceful and hectic free birth as possible. But this doesnt mean that the mother cant scream.

I mean if you have ever seen videos of an average childbirth, she is screaming bloody murder.

Here is the offical church website on the subject.

And by the way, many thousands of doctors advocate this pratice. We all want the best for our younglings i think.

Here is also the offical church of scientology website.

I'm all for a quiet, gentle birth, but in all honesty, I don't see the advantage of a child being born into a silent room. They hear voices in the womb, they hear our day-to-day lives. Wouldn't it be kind of strange to go from that, to silence?

And I think it's a scientology thing. I've never heard of anyone else endorsing it.

Scientology is the only one I know of. Do a search. I don't believe it means the woman has to be totally silent, but all those around her are, I think.

Please don't say that all Christians advocate it. That's not true.

The only religion that does Silent Birth is the one you mentioned. I never heard of it and I don't care for it.

I am a Scientologist mother of three. I was never forced to be silent during birth, but I did want to ensure that noise was kept to a minimum.

Come on, you're having a baby. Do the best you can and keep the noise, especially words, to a minimum. That's all. Thetaalways explains the rest.

The mother can make all the noise they want, we all know that giving birth to a baby is not easy, especially the natural way! Those watching like family members cannot say anything.

It means you deliver naturally...no drugs, and NO screaming, moaning, yelling, and any kind of pain.... you have a smile on your face...and then you deliver...RIGHT!!
This is only Scientology's way...
