Lourdes is a place of pilgrimage following the appearance of the Blessed Virgin to Bernadette SOubirous in 1858. The waters that flow there are reputed to have curative powers. There have been 60-some described miraculous healings.
It is a matter of personal belief, not of universal revelation (ie, Scripture) and so not all Catholics are required to believe in it. Many non-Catholic Christians discredit the apparitions.

It is the site of a series of Marian apparitions seen by St. Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, and the water of the Lourdes grotto is considered by many people to be miraculous. However, this is often considered to be a predominantly Catholic belief, and many Protestants do not believe in the visions or miracles of Lourdes, or in Our Lady of Lourdes.

Lourdes is one of those things you cannot explain (except by religeous means). Ive put holy water on a non-believer's warts, and voila! instant results!
He maintains to this day it was something in the water, or that it was a fluke and his body cured itself. Some people just never get the Word.............

You won't find any reference to Lourdes in the Bible so it is not important to Christians who follow the Bible. Sounds like a man-made idea to me.

It is a site where spirituality bridged the distance between itself and humanity.
Although the 'holy mother' only appeared to a select group of children in order to deliver her message, the fact that she did so gives those of a particular faith reason to believe that God truly does care about them and their lives.

Because the church made a ton of money out of the place. They had to make it a shrine to keep the money coming in.

No clue - except that she's Madonna's daughter; perhaps they fear she will follow in her mother's footsteps.
