Akita are strictly one family dogs. They're extremely tolerable to children in what they regard as 'their' family, but I would not allow them unsupervised around strange children or strangers in general. They're also fairly territorial and extremely stubborn. They're highly intelligent as well, which makes training them both exceptionall easy, but then the stubborn aspect of their personality kicks in and they balk at every thing unless you prove that you are the leader. They're smart, and they can tell if you're going to give in on things. An Akita will run right over a weak willed owner. They may look like cute little teddy bears when they're itty-bitty, but they grow up to be massive dogs and if you don't establish that boss/dog relationship early on, the akita will be snoozing on the bed every night while you take the couch.

I owned an Akita years ago. We had 2 older kids at the time and they got along well. ToJo was very smart, very loving, a wonderful dog. The main thing is they are very protective of their family abd home. I asked a neighbor to cme change a flat tire. While he was changing it, the Akita bit him on the hand. Thankfully the guy was wearing thick gloves and the skin was not broken. That was the only time he bit anybody. ToJo thought the guy was doing something wrong and he was just being protective. I think like with other breeds, it depends on how they are raised and genetics are also factored in. If the parents(dogs) are mean and aggressive, chances are the dog will be too. Check out the parents when you go to look at the pups. Of course the mom may be aggressive becuse of the pups. Ask the breeder about their temperament. If your children are very small(toddlers) I would suggesy waiting until they are older before getting ANY dog./

The Akita is a very nice looking dog, that is stocky in build, and are excellent guard dogs. And can weigh up to 55kg.

Mostly docile, but will become aggressive towards other dogs or other animals. Needs to be supervised when there are children around (as all dogs should be supervised with children). Like most dogs will bite if provoked.

Basically if trained well, and supervised around children it should be fine. Also buy from a reputable breeder.

We are on our second Akita, male, eight years old, 115 pounds.

Akita's are not an ideal dog for kids and strangers. They are protective and were bred to hunt and fight. I love our doggies. They have killed many animals during their time and are fearless. Our current Akita Junior will choose to growl and could bite, although he never has.

These dogs are not poodles or Golden Retrievers. I suggest that you go to another breed if you live in a neighborhood with children. The dog could bite a child and will absolutely have the potential kill your neighbors pets.

I love this bred, but mine is in the country behind a fence and I never would leave him alone with strangers let alone a strange child.

I own an Akita dog (look at the picture of my photo)

I have a three year old daughter and a ten day old baby boy.
My Akita has taken both under his wing and loves them. My girl jumps all over him and he does nothing. He sits next to my baby and when the baby cries he comes over to us to get us to do something (true). He is very friendly with people we allow into the home and has been very easy to house train. He has defended me twice whilst in woods. both times with merit. He has never started a fight with another dog but has defended himself against any that start with him. He never backs down from a dog. He is loving, loyal, friendly and protective. What more could you want? Akita's are cute and powerful at the same time. You feel safe walking with an Akita. Your home feels safe with an Akita in it. When we put our girl outside in the back garden to play the Akita is alway's with her. The dog has never being anything but loving and protective over her. We are looking in a year to get another Akita (girl) this time. My only advice is to buy one.

Akitas are very aggressive dogs in general. If you have to ask this question about akitas then this is not the dog for you.

This is a big, powerful dog with strong territorial/guard instincts. I think most akitas are too much for a novice dog owner to handle.

they can be mean/aggressive but that depends on if you want them to be. you have to get a puppy to be sure of its behavior. you cant abuse it or it will be mean, pay attention to it and train it without being mean (have patience) and most likely it will be a sweet dog.

P.S. i dont think that you will abuse your puppy. only sad/sick minded people do that! = )
