I've started reading up on religions shared around the world. I was a raised a Christian (but am currently on the fence about the whole existance of God) and was taught that the pentagram was basically a sign of the devil. Now I'm reading that its history is not so shady afterall? Can anyone elaborate please?

I've attached a link from a reputable website, the symbol's taken a knocking over the years, but it's origins aren't at all nasty.

Certainly, what a polite question.

The pentagram predates Christianity and in fact wasn't related to it for most of history. It's a pagan symbol that represents five elements; earth, fire, water, air, and spirit. The idea is that all these elements are interconnected and the drawing joins them and keeps them in balance. So it's a creative, balancing symbol.

Likewise, it's representative of a Goddess figure, because if you chart Venus in the heavens its movements draw a nearly perfect pentagram in the sky. The pentagram can also be inverted to represent the male god figure (and this can be used in a positive light although to some pagans it can mean malintent).

Christianity has always frowned on paganism, of course, and since it's a symbol of competing deities it's natural for them to say it's of Satan, since pretty much everything not Christian is from Satan in their view.

However, Satan is a figure in Christian mythos and pagans who use the pentagram have no such associations... those who believe in deities, Satan is not one of them.

Best wishes

Isn't it amazing what a little study will bring you? I went through a lot of that when I was a christian.
The pentagram is an ancient symbol of protection and has been used by many different beliefs (including christianity) over the centuries.

Look up God's name. Solomon first made the pentagram using the name Yehovah. I read it in an encyclopedia, and was shocked.

Christians used to use it as the symbol of Jesus's five wounds. Its a symbol of the goddess and the invert is the sign of the god. Its also the five elements. Wind, water, earth, fire and spirit. Nope no evil to it what so ever. That would be thanks to the smear campaign in the middle ages.
