Opinion polls show that Americans overwhelmingly oppose his policy in Iraq. Is there a point where the president has to bow to the wishes of the people and his own party, and not be concerned about his legacy?

No, he wasn't elected to represent Americans (the people) but to represent the Military Industrial Complex making billions and billions of dollars off this (or any other) so-called war - many of the people running some of those companies are not Americans.

If Bush were worried about his legacy, he would have 'bowed to pressure' long ago. He was elected to make decisions, not to read and follow the latest CNN poll.

He understands the threat and that even if it has cost him prestige, it is in the national interest to fight this war against terrorism.

It would appear that there are politicians on both sides of the aisle that will lay aside national interest for votes. It appears however that there are more on the left side of the aisle.

The only time I have heard to the term "legacy" is from a liberal. I don't believe Bush's over-riding concern is on the legacy he leaves behind.

Don't know...what is the point when any politcian has to "bow" to the wishes of the people? The wishes of the people is to repeal the tax code and give people tax breaks and yet the democrats want to increase taxes. Should they not "bow" as well?
