I have a BMW e46 business cd player. It turns off itself and only comes back on if i open and close car door??

Might be linked to the interior light if it's happening when You open the door.

i have Citroen xsara (don't pity me!) but my car does the same and it says Eco mode on the screen, so its obviously to save battery power,

It is designed to do that, to prevent a flat battery.
